Yamaha MT-10 and its competitors

What must she be able to do?

Does it have to be that way? High-end superbike motors and suspensions in ordinary naked bikes? Sure, the ruble is rolling. Now Yamaha is coming with the MT-10, but initially leaves many questions unanswered. MOTORRAD says what it has to be able to do compared to the strong competition.

The number has a method, only the meaning behind it does not become apparent. There was a finished motorcycle at EICMA 2015 in Milan, production was a done deal, there were official press photos and a press text, a name, color and equipment options. There was only one thing that did not exist: binding data on the core parameters in this field, namely performance and weight. Or was it like Triumph: They were so embarrassed about the top performance of their new Twins that they simply didn’t dare to make it public before the ride. But that was in the case of the YThe amaha MT-10 is hard to imagine, because after all it is a direct descendant of the 200 hp super athlete R1.

Yamaha MT-10 and its competitors

What must she be able to do?

Character of the perfect naked bike

The ideal naked bike in this performance league: it would have the full punch of the mighty KTM 1290 Super Duke R, it would have the feedback, accuracy, handling and stability of the Aprilia Tuono V4 1100 R, it would have the brilliant suitability for everyday use and the equipment options BMW S 1000 R and the dynamic elegance of an MV Agusta Brutale 1090 and could be bought for the unbeatable price of a Suzuki GSX-S 1000. Anyone who says: everything is a pipe dream – of course, he is right. But he’s also overlooking something. The Yamaha MT-10 has systems that give rise to high hopes. Especially when it comes to the engine concept.

Crossplane: the best of both worlds

Anyone who has never enjoyed the best of all V2s, namely the KTM 1290 Super Duke R, has truly missed something. Its trademark is power that is casually shaken out of the crankcase in all positions and speed regions. Of course, this has a lot to do with the displacement advantage – but it is all the more astonishing how smooth and cultivated this exuberant power is presented. But: The fat duke could become a serious opponent with the Yamaha MT-10. Mainly because the uneven crank pin misalignment of the crossplane concept succeeds in something amazing: It turns a conventional four-in-a-row into a real character actor with a V4 attitude. Anyone who has ever ridden the current Yamaha YZF-R1 knows what V4 feels like. And anyone who has ever driven the crossplane engine of the R1’s direct predecessor also knows how powerful such an engine can go down to work. Still, there are doubts, because the new R1 engine sacrifices this pressure in the lower speed range almost completely on the altar of high peak performance.

“Numerous significant changes have been made to the engine. The goal was powerful torque at low to medium revs, ”says Yamaha. Can you believe that? A little mapping magic (demonstrably very effective with the R1) or the large cutlery with more flywheel on the crankshaft, tamer valve timing, maybe even smaller valve diameters? The latter is probably not, while the first two measures are more than likely according to MOTORRAD research. That – and a revised gear set-up plus a shorter secondary gear ratio plus new forged pistons plus new airbox plus new silencer – can all add up to an explosive mix.

How this works is shown not least by the four-in-a-row of the BMW S 1000 R, which has undergone a similar treatment in its metamorphosis from racing to everyday engine. The Bayern-Naked even shows the powerful KTM 1290 Super Duke R in terms of pure driving performance, where the Bartel gets the must, but does not offer the earthy V4 character of the crossplane concept by far. So we can be very excited about this engine. When it comes to top performance, the Yamaha MT-10 does not break any new records, but 160 hp and a weight of 210 kilograms should be more than sufficient in every driving situation.

Supersport suspension: real feeling, even in everyday life

The direct transformation from the racetrack to the country road – that was the dream of power-hungry naked bikers for years, not only for the engine, but also for the chassis. Today it is a reality, and nowhere do these dreams come true as at Aprilia Tuono. At least when it comes to conventional chassis technology. Nobody gives in so greedily, handling, stability and feedback are top notch. The question is: can this be packed for the Yamaha MT-10? The answer: from the paper form, definitely, because the bitterly evil Yamaha is basically an R1 in robber civilian clothes. In other words: the frame, KYB fork and shock absorber come one-to-one from the athlete, but have been retuned for the new purpose. The frame should even offer a little more flex than the stiff component in the R1, the wheelbase is surprisingly small compared to the competition. 140 millimeters – that’s around 30 millimeters more than the most compact class competitor and even 45 millimeters less than the agile Tuono.

Another comparison: A KTM 1290 Super Duke R comes in with a tank of 1482 millimeters. So these values and the good handling of the R1, which is known even in Superbike circles, give rise to legitimate hopes. The same applies to the quality of the spring elements. If the fork and shock absorber are actually R1 goods, we look forward to transparency in all (inclined) positions.

Equipment of the Yamaha MT-10: everything on board

Does it really have to be titanium and magnesium? For an athlete like the R1, something like this lowers the weight and enhances the image; on a naked bike like the Yamaha MT-10, you can do without exotic materials for the connecting rods, exhausts, rear frames and wheels, especially as some of them are thanks to those sold in the USA, cheaper YZF-R1 S is in the parts shelf anyway. What you should definitely have with a cracker like the new Yamaha, however, is a bundle of assistance systems in order to master the concentrated power. BMW is traditionally a pioneer in this area, and the S 1000 R naturally sets the pace even with the powerful naked bikes. But the new Yamaha MT-10 is hard on her heels. Ride-by-wire, ABS, traction control, anti-hopping clutch – of course, both have. On the other hand, the MT-10 does not have an electronic chassis (extra for the S 1000 R), but an automatic gearshift mechanism as an option (but without a blipper function). In return, the Yamaha technicians delight the Wilde Reiter faction with a touring cruise control and LED headlights in the jagged front mask. All of this, however, at no extra charge, as is customary in Munich. So the bottom line is that the Yamaha MT-10 is ahead of the competition in terms of equipment and everyday suitability.

Design: MV shows how it’s done

What to say The beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Yamaha says that – motivated by the success of the MT series – they deliberately chose such a provocative design. Others say BMW supplied the template with the K 1300 R years ago. Anyway: The timeless elegance – combined with an aggressive attitude, as delivered by the MV Agusta 1090 Brutale – is denied to the Yamaha MT-10. However, the success of the BMW S 1000 R and the KTM 1290 Super Duke R also shows that an angular tendency to egocentricity and less than ideal proportions do not stand in the way of sales success if the rest is right. From this point of view, one can also have good hope at Yamaha.

The price: between the extremes

When it comes to money, the fun stops. This probably also applies to this high-end class, in which the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 is the entry-level model with a good 12,000 euros and the new Ducati Monster R is the top at over 18,000 euros. And the price of the Yamaha MT-10? Could position itself in the lower third with around 14,000 euros and thus make an inexpensive offer. A row four with the brute thrust of a KTM 1290 Super Duke R, the V4 growling and the chassis qualities of a Tuono, the equipment of a BMW S 1000 R and Japanese solidity. That would be something.
