New in Indian 2019: the FTR1200 is in the starting blocks
The 2017 champion – and 2018 soon! – of American Flat Track enters phase three of its program: after the competition and preparation, Indian took advantage of the Wheels and Waves festival to announce the marketing in 2019 of the FTR1200…
With, Indian returned to competition … and with success, since the first American manufacturer – the oldest! – and their top driver Jared Mees largely dominated the AMA Flat Track championship in 2017. As a reminder, the duo had won nine wins in fifteen finals.
This year, the "Number One" is even stronger: two weeks ago in Remington Park (Oklahoma, USA), Mister Mees won his seventh victory in nine races! At mid-season, the official driver totals 195 points (out of 225 therefore) and has 59 lengths ahead of Henry Wiles, a private driver who also rides on Indian !
The FTR750 has – almost – everything
The Spirit Lake firm also crushes the US championship: it has monopolized the three steps of the podium in the last six events! In the provisional 2018 Top 10 of the pilots, only two men do not race on FTR750: Brian Bauman is 7th on his Kawasaki Ninja 650, Brandon Robinson is 10th on his Harley-Davidson XG750R…
With, Indian has traveled to international fairs … and also met with great success. According to the factory, the enthusiasm is such that it decided to produce an FTR1200 "short". The official announcement was made last weekend in Biarritz (France!), During the Wheels and Waves festival.
The Americans have not disclosed any information on their new model, nor mentioned a specific release date: the bike will be in concession during 2019. "That‘s all folks!" ? Not totally, since they slip in passing that their future FTR1200 "will adopt the sleek style of flat track motorcycles, a trellis frame and a new V-twin engine"…
Unlike the concept powered by the two-cylinder Scout, the standard FTR1200 could therefore inaugurate a new mill – still water – designed for this new "Road Flat Track", but also in anticipation of future models, responsible for coming out. Indian from its Custom department.
The FTR1200 # 00001 is to be won !
In any case, this is what the president of Polaris Industries, a Minneapolis group which has courageously bought and brilliantly relaunched Indian at the beginning of the decade (2010 …) is planning. According to Mike Dougherty therefore, Indian must explore new "avenues" and innovate.
Of which act: the very first FTR1200 to leave the production line is put into play! "You insisted on it. We heard you. The Indian FTR1200 is coming. Try to win it before it is revealed", launches the brand. "Good luck" to all !
Official statements
Rich Christoph, designer and designer:
"We wanted to make sure that the FTR 1200 was not a variation of the FTR1200 Custom concept, but a unique bike, designed for the road but inspired by the world of flat track. We are delighted with the uniqueness of the bike and of its ability to take American V-twins to new territories ".
Michael Dougherty, President of Polaris Industries:
"From the start, our intention was to make Indian a global brand. Built on a solid foundation, now is the time for this American motorcycle manufacturer to innovate, and the FTR 1200 is the starting point.".
