Sold out! For a long time had to or could Yamaha did not use this term for its model range, the bikes with the tuning forks in the logo stood like lead in the shops. That changed suddenly at the beginning of the year with the Yamaha MT-09, the three-cylinder was completely out of stock from the start. Many customers are still waiting for their vehicle to this day. Despite its popularity, the middle grader leaves some room for improvement – keywords chassis and seating position.

Klein or Motorradtke on the plan. Both took great care of the Yamaha MT-09. Klein focuses more on suitability for everyday use, Motorradtke on pure racing. Nevertheless, the conversions have at least one thing in common: They are incredibly fun when shooting.

Just looking at the Yamaha MT-09 from Motorrad Klein is electrifying: two-tone paintwork in bright red and bright white, the entire finish from the other planet. Perfection even where you can’t see it. "The steering head bearing and the bearings for the strut deflection are precision parts," explains company boss Dominik Klein. “They improve target accuracy and refine the response behavior of the spring elements.” These come from Ohlins, which required some adjustment work. “Because of the larger diameter of the fork tubes, we had to mill new bridges. But the offset is identical. ”Because the Swedes do not offer a shock absorber with a reservoir for the Yamaha MT-09, the technician converted a part that was originally developed for a Suzuki. It almost goes without saying that Klein redesigned the front and rear suspension and damping.

The brakes also required a lot of detailed work. In order to be able to mount fine Brembo M50 calipers, the fork feet of a Ducati 999 R. Z04 brake pads (also Brembo), 5.5 millimeter thick discs and the brand new radial brake pump from Magura (HC3) complete the brake mix. The handlebar, which is 30 millimeters lower and 40 millimeters wider, also comes from the Swabian manufacturer. The magnesium wheels from PVM are a special treat. Simply breathtaking how the Yamaha MT-09 hammers around the Hockenheimer Kringel! The yam circles very precisely and with playful handling. At the front it is about 5 millimeters lower, at the back Klein lifted it a little over the strut. The Bridgestone slicks (V02), which were specially fitted for this test, generate great grip, and thanks to the larger diameter of the rear skin, the rear is a little higher. Nevertheless, the three-cylinder Yam does not seem front-heavy. The rear wheel, which is set back around 15 millimeters via a longer chain, provides sufficient stability. In addition, the cleverly attached steering damper keeps the load steady. Criticism? Nothing. Only for very fast laps do you want the handlebars a little lower to get even more feel for the front wheel.

The brakes, on the other hand, give you an amazing feeling! The pump offers three different setting options and thus simulates different piston diameters. In addition to the dosage, the effect, transparency and stability are among the best that the scribbler has ever gotten hold of. In addition, the superb, adjustable anti-hopping clutch prevents the rear wheel from stamping when anchoring brutally, and the automatic gearshift enables smooth, clutch-free upshifts.

Small Yamaha MT-09 with 143 HP

This is matched by the excellent engine performance. Sharper camshafts, increased compression by forged pistons, heavily revised intake paths with self-made ram air and short funnels, as well as a lot of fine work on the intake ducts, valve seats and the cooling circuit push the performance to a whopping 143 hp . In addition, the (non-approved) exhaust throws a dull, pithy sound into the open. The Yamaha MT-09 hangs perfectly on the gas and burns evenly and with a fabulous thump through the rev range.

At this point a tip for those who are annoyed by the too hard throttle response of their series Yamaha MT-09: Yamaha is now responding to the criticism and is offering a free software update through its dealers. In addition, electronics guru Stefan Briege (www.motorsport-brix.xobor.de) offers extensive options for optimizing the series ECU. But be careful: Although this interference can hardly be proven, the operating license expires.

For example, the front fairing: The part originally adorned an R6, Singer adapted it for the Yamaha MT-09. The provocatively tight, self-supporting rear frame, on the other hand, comes from a former 125cc GP racer and has also been modified. On the other hand, the front upholstery of the bench is rather bulky. "It positions the driver perfectly," says the man from Gera, justifying its rough shape. As befits a real racing bike, the handlebars sit far down – a full 160 millimeters lower than the standard handlebars. In order to be able to comfortably reach the stubs with their hands, the Thuringians had to weld around the series tank. It is now nice and narrow at the bottom, wider at the top – what a hell of a job!

In fact, the Yamaha MT-09 from Motorradtke offers a first-class workplace. The rider has the bike under control and is happy about the brilliant feedback from the front and rear. This is largely due to the elaborately adapted and revised spring elements (Ohlins) that have been adapted to the MT frame. They speak above ground and have huge reserves. The handling is also top notch. The MT-09 almost craves curves and willingly plunges into ever deeper slopes. At the same time, she behaves wonderfully stable and neutral, with no trace of nervousness or unsteadiness. It also mills around the course with millimeter precision and willingly follows the targeted line – this is exactly how a racing bike should drive!

On the engine side, the huge radiator stands out. “During test drives, we even had to mask it at an outside temperature of 35 degrees. It’s a bit oversized. ”The tuner tickled the 130 hp peak power mainly through the modified intake system including a self-made ram air system and a racing exhaust from the drive. “Although the engine is already running more fuel, it is still a little too lean – a consequence of the original ECU. We’ll soon be fine-tuning the motor with a Power Commander. ”The hardware tuning has apparently not yet been completed either. “We are aiming for 145 HP, but we also need other camshafts.” The engine is already running with low rotating masses because the alternator is missing. You will also look in vain for a starter. The bottom line is that the Motorradtke-Yamaha MT-09 is a lightning-fast racer that has little in common with the series. The lap time of 1.31.4 minutes in Oschersleben by professional racer Jan Buhn underlines: Mission accomplished!
