Yamaha MT-09 upgrade for Euro 5
More displacement and more power
In the course of adapting to the Euro 5 standard, Yamaha has given the MT-09 a small increase in displacement. The performance also increases slightly.
The new Euro 5 standard will take effect on January 1, 2021, and all motorcycle manufacturers will have to adapt their models accordingly. At Yamaha this is among other things the MT-09.
Completely new three-cylinder
Yamaha
The Japanese hyper-naked bike does not suffer from Euro 5, but actually benefits from it. The three-cylinder CP3 increases its displacement from 847 to 889 cm³. It wasn’t just drilled open, virtually every major component is new, including pistons, connecting rods, camshafts and crankcases. The injection system has also been completely redesigned. The power increases by four to 119 hp at 10,000 rpm. The maximum torque increases from 88 to 93 Nm and is also 1,500 turns earlier – already at 7,000 rpm. Despite the larger displacement and higher performance, the drive weight (engine plus exhaust) is 1.7 kilograms lower. The driving pleasure should also increase because of the Quickshifter for upshifting and downshifting. In addition, gears one and two have a longer ratio, new shift fork and new clutch linings optimize gear changes.
Yamaha
Tea three-cylinder is now controlled by an electronic throttle valve control and a new ride-by-wire system, which is similar to that of the Yamaha R1. Based on a six-axis IMU, the new MT-09 offers lean angle-sensitive traction control (TCS), a slide control system (SCS), LIFT control system (LIF) on the front wheel and a brake control system (BC) . The traction control can be regulated in three stages – an individual setting is also possible.
The exhaust gases escape through a new exhaust system with new manifolds and now two side outlets – one on each side. The banana swing of the rear swing arm is correspondingly defused.
The frame and swing arm are also new
Completely new is not only the three-cylinder, but also the frame that supports it. The 2021 MT-09 gets a completely new, lightweight CF aluminum die-cast Deltabox frame. The swing arm, which is now hinged inside the frame, and the rear frame, which is now made of aluminum, are also new. The overall package saves 2.3 kilograms in weight and is 50 percent more torsion-resistant. The new ten-spoke alloy wheels save 700 grams. AT shortened, fully adjustable 41 mm KYB USD fork and a 30 millimeter lowered handlebar bring more front wheel orientation. The adjustable rear KYB shock absorber has been adapted to the new framework conditions. The front brake system including radial brake pump is borrowed from the new MT-09 from the Yamaha R1.
Changed design, higher price
Of course, the design did not remain untouched either. Headlights, tank, seat and exhaust move even closer to the engine. Side panels are completely eliminated. The license plate is again on a long arm at the rear. The new 3.5 inch TFT instruments have a full color display. The speed is indicated by a bar that changes color. In addition to the speed, the display also includes the gear indicator, coolant and ambient temperature and much more.
leaked
The new main headlight uses LED technology and is flanked by two LED daytime running light strips. The Y-shaped LED rear light has also been redesigned.
The new MT-09 comes in three colors: Storm Fluo, Icon Blue and Tech Black. It will be available in dealerships from March 2021. Yamaha is offering 9,399 euros as the base price. In addition, there are ancillary costs of 400 euros. This makes the new MT-09 around 400 euros more expensive.
Conclusion
Other manufacturers have already followed the path of more displacement to adapt to Euro 5. The already delicious three-cylinder from Yamaha will definitely not harm more displacement and more horsepower.
