Having earned his stripes as a tramp a long time ago, the scrambler is gleaning those of the nobility. A new wind is blowing in the category, where both skills and quality are on the rise. Norton is in this vein, taking advantage of a regained vigor and a strong image to embark on this bath with a double-sided machine. Its 650 Atlas has a very nice look, with a Nomad version for the road and this Ranger version for venturing on more difficult terrain..
The Atlas 650 is the first “accessible” Norton of the 21st century. An entry-level model … However, what a look. Like a young overlord eager for rebellion and impatient to plunge her pumps into the slush, she is about to scandalize moods with delight while dreaming of the edge of the woods.
Sometimes, from the garage to the forest, the journey is not that far. It is enough to crack the twin to go to meet it. In the Atlas, there is a 650 cc parallel twin. Norton has almost cut the V4 of its hypersport to end up with a compact box, with a torque of 6.6 mkg and particularly powerful for its displacement. For this type of engine, the power is usually between 70 and 75 horsepower – on the English, the slider climbs to 84 horsepower. Not bad ! What offer light, almost muscular accelerations. With its 270 ° timing, the engine tends to offer a character close to that of a V-twin.
The Ranger follows the road, until it comes to less academic mouths. This is where it differs from the Nomad. With its small mudguard under the headlight, its Avon Trekrider tread tires and its generous aluminum shoe, we already suspected that the off-road potential was present. This is confirmed with a greater suspension travel: 200 mm or 50 more than the “road” Atlas. The inverted 50mm fork is adjustable in all directions while the monoshock can only be adjusted for preload. Both elements are signed Roadholder, a name closely linked to Norton. The wheels are different too, with a taller and wider front for the Ranger (120/70 – 19 vs. 110/80 – 18) while the rear tapers a little bit (170/60 – 17 vs. 180 / 55 – 17).
The Ranger benefits from more ground clearance, which inevitably affects the height of the saddle. 867 mm separates it from the ground – it is not at the level of an enduro but it starts to require flexibility at the level of the adductors. The dissimilarities continue with a reinforced handlebars, a headlight protected by a grille (more stylish than really convincing), a sport screen, and a greater search for stability with a wheelbase of 1470 mm or 24 more than on the Nomad.
Whatever the version, the Atlas 650 benefits from great gear, including braking provided by one-piece Brembo radial-mounting calipers biting 320 mm tracks (which can be found on a good sports car), a beautiful aluminum swingarm, a bi-material saddle, a raised exhaust, perforated triple trees, braided brake hoses and spoke rims.
This scrambler shares its engine with the 650 Superlight – the latter pushes it to the next level – but benefits from its own frame. The manufacturer has concocted a perimeter in steel tubes which we should not be disappointed with..
A first series of 250 could be ordered at Motorcycle Live in Birmingham. It takes 20% more on the price compared to the Nomad to acquire the Ranger. Which brings it to the price of a 1200 NineT Scrambler, much more supplied in torque and watts; and not very far from a Triumph Scrambler XC rich in electronics. The influence of the Donington coat of arms against that of Hinckley or Munich will be essential.
