Out and about: On vacation with the DB Autozug
On the go: travel with the DB Autozug
With the DB Autozug on vacation
Sounds clever: Instead of using tires, nerves and fuel on your holiday trip, it’s better to transport your bike and crew by train. Read everything you need to know about DB Autozug.

The motorcycle boots are under the seats, provisions packages are unpacked, corkscrews are being used, and a good mood is spreading. Whether you are a chopper or an athlete, a holiday on the train starts positively for everyone. Instead of ironing across endless highways in full gear, many motorcyclists travel relaxed with them, but not on their bikes. That parks peacefully and securely lashed in the transport vehicle of the car train. Car trains mostly run overnight. An ICE would probably only need half the time for the respective distance, but the speed is not important with the car trains. The holiday destination should deliberately not be reached until the next morning. The (short) breakfast is provided by the train.
Straight highways are boring, cost fuel, tire treads and, in many places, also motorway tolls. Sitting forever does not improve the mood of the pillion passenger either. On the way to the holiday region, you usually have to look for accommodation for the night, often at steep prices. If you want to save your resources for your actual vacation, opt for a means of transport that combines the motorway, rest stop and night quarters. The prices are quite different, depending on the route and, above all, on the type of accommodation in a couchette or sleeping car. In the off-season, the railway sometimes offered special prices, e.g. B. Driver and motorcycle for 99 euros from Dusseldorf to Narbonne or the same thing including passenger for 149 euros. It is not yet known what Deutsche Bahn will come up with for the 2010 postseason.

Motorcycles are always on the lower level in the car transporter. There are special ramps – hence the small number of terminals – to get into the wagons. Every biker has to retract himself. The steel horses are leashed by railroad workers. Before the hooks are latched, the motorcycle is fitted with a textile loop. The workers are professionals and fortunately do not hang the loop on the mirrors. Incidentally, when entering, you should bend your head significantly towards the tank, because these low wagons were never built for motorcyclists.
In the 1970s, Deutsche Bahn used it to transport VW Beetles and other cars from the plant to the provinces. Back then, most cars were smaller than they are today. Today, new cars are mainly brought to dealers by truck, which is why the railway was looking for a new use for its car transporter. Motorcyclists now make up a third of DB Autozug passengers. While size restrictions apply to cars (a Hummer off-road vehicle is probably not allowed), almost anything is possible for two-wheelers. Teams or trikes are also allowed. Side cases, tank bags and other luggage can remain on the motorcycle as long as it is firmly attached. The passengers travel in couchette cars (four to six foldable beds) or in sleeping cars with two or three beds. The sanitary facilities in the couchette cars are tight. After all, they are also cleaned during the journey, after all, train attendants also travel with them. A dining car is not always there, and that’s why nobody looks weird when self-caterers bring food with them on the train. However, you should be sober again by the next morning at the latest when unloading the car transporter.

Enjoyment on the train instead of the stress of the motorway.
The problem with car trains: there are only a few that run, and they by no means always run when you need them. They also don’t necessarily go from the starting point and to the destination that you want. In recent years, Deutsche Bahn has cut the route network for its car trains quite a bit. If you want to be beamed to the Dolomite passes overnight, you shouldn’t live south of the Ruhr area. The train only offers car trains to Bolzano from Hamburg, Berlin, Hildesheim and Dusseldorf. Those who live further south should, according to the will of the railway, drive into the Alps on their own wheels. Or, in spite of all common sense, first drive north and then let yourself be driven south in a train carriage.
The same applies to travelers to the south of France: The southernmost starting point for piggyback traffic to Avignon is Hildesheim (1200 kilometers). The Dusseldorf-Innsbruck route, on the other hand, is offered, although only 700 kilometers long. Lorrach on the Swiss border is the only train station in Baden-Wurttemberg from which car trains depart. But only in the north. The same applies to Bavaria: Would you like to make a quick decision from Munich in the direction of Spain? Nothing. The former terminal Kornwestheim near Stuttgart has closed the railway. In addition, car trains often only run from May to October and during this time on some routes only once a week. During the holiday season, the trains are booked out well in advance. This means that trips of this kind have to be planned and booked well in advance. After all, you can now find out online whether there is still a space available for the bike and its rider. Even inexperienced drivers can extend and retract.
Car trains are not only available from Deutsche Bahn. “Motorbike on the train” is the name of the offer that the former Danube Monarchy Austria developed for bikers. International routes run from or to Austria from Germany (Vienna-Hamburg-Vienna), Croatia, Slovenia and Italy. The routes within Austria can also be interesting. The distance “once Austria from left to right”, To put it correctly: from Feldkirch to Vienna, it is 620 kilometers long. On the rails, the motorcycle rides on this route for 39.90 euros or for 49.90 euros plus 63.50 euros for the driver, depending on the season. Anyone who travels back from Vienna to Hamburg with the help of the Austrian Federal Railways pays 52 euros for their motorcycle. The costs for the passenger vary greatly, depending on whether only a seat, a berth or a sleeping car compartment is booked. Price comparisons are important! It may be cheaper to book the return journey with the Austrian Federal Railways instead of DB Autozug. Everything you need to know is available at www.oebb.at. It looks different with the Confederates. Although the portal www.autoreisezug.ch initially suggests this, Swiss railways do not offer any international routes. The connections to Germany and Austria are nothing more than a reference to the offer of the German railways or the Austrian federal railways. Of course, there are car and motorcycle loads within Switzerland. However, they are not used to save long distances, but to drive under some mountain ranges through tunnels. Since mountain passes are the dream of many bikers, you will hardly choose to load the train through the dark tunnel instead. Unless it’s snowing further up.
The current situation with French car trains is obscure. Their previous routes can be found on the website www.raileurope.eu. The marketing officers informed MOTORRAD in mid-March 2010 that it was not yet certain whether the French car trains would run in the summer of 2010. The website www.eurostar-reisebuero.de provides information on the subject of Italian car trains. A connection from Villach to Edirne, Turkey (240 euros) is offered at www.optimatours.de. Further information is available online at www.autozuege-in-europa.de.
