Getting faster is up to the driver. Don’t always be faster, because every now and then someone else stands in the way. From the rolling chicane in race training to dogged duels in races: overtaking has to be learned. That’s how it’s done!

In the last few episodes we were always alone with ourselves and the track. That was a good thing, because first you should concentrate on yourself, be able to read the racetrack and find the right line. We pay attention to the right gear, look for the right braking points for every curve and work on the turn-in point or where we accelerate again. And if that wasn’t enough, there is still a big chunk of it. Because now that we can do all of this, we have become noticeably faster – often faster than others on the slopes. This is the moment for real men. This is where it is decided who is a real racer. You guessed it: It’s about overtaking. It’s about the honor.

When driving freely in my training groups, I notice time and again that participants follow the man in front for long laps, even though they could drive faster. Now from racer to racer: We’re real guys who don’t allow anything to be forced upon us at home, right? Then why do we let a complete stranger motorcyclist impose his rhythm and speed on us on the racetrack of all places? And if we then lag behind long enough, we will very soon drive the same boot together and our learning success will be with the devil.

So basic rule one: Don’t let yourself be dictated by the pace. If you can go faster, then overtake and do your thing. It looks different in the race. It is sometimes advisable to study your opponent a little first to see where you have an advantage. But also check where you are slower yourself, because when we are over, the enemy will start the attack in the last round at the latest.

There are different views on how to divide up a race. It has already happened to me that I held back almost the entire race, even though I could have passed, and then the race was stopped because of rain or a fall. That was probably nothing. My lesson from this and my tip: If you think that you are faster and can open a gap, then go! Don’t just think two laps, but until the end of the race: Are you in good shape? Do you know where to close the door? But these are the next steps.

It is not always up to the driver to be faster, because every now and then someone else stands in the way.

Here’s just a basic thing: Before we start to overtake, we have to decide how much risk is appropriate at that moment. If an experienced racer brakes past a beginner at his comfortable pace, the poor guy may well avoid a heart attack and take the direct route into the gravel. Many amateur racers do not know the limit area and are shocked at how fast you can drive into such a curve. The crack probably won’t even remember the situation – it was normal for him. My message on this: In racing training, many drivers are on the road at different levels. Give yourself enough air to live during these training sessions, then everyone will have fun. Here it has absolutely nothing to do with honor, risky overtaking – that is stupidity! Although things were always close at the IDM, according to my observations it was a lot safer there than with free race training. In a championship you (mostly) know your Pappenheimers and know what they are doing.

In race training, on the other hand, there are many unknowns and you never know what one or the other is up to over the next few meters. So be careful! Which, by the way, also applies to the overtaken. If someone wants to pass by who has been on the rear wheel for a long time, then there is no point in suddenly marking the late brake during his overtaking maneuver. He’ll try again in the next corner – just with more risk.

So that overtaking works in practice, we will show in the next episode how to prepare the maneuver, when to decide whether to go inside or outside and how to finally execute it. Until then…
