Paton is one of those brands at times of past glory and which are reborn after a few tones of torpor. Its machines have accompanied the Continental Circus for several decades. For a successful comeback, there are only a few options. Either high-end prestige, or a shattering entry (comeback?) In competition. And why not a little bit of one and a good dose of the other !?!
And that’s how the S1-R Lightweight was born. A motorcycle not quite like the others. A sportswoman not at all as you would imagine. Tight, racy, prominent as is fashion? Nay. Curvatures, an almost difficult physique, the face of a nice monster created at Pixar … The machine surprises, seems shy and almost lost. But his fate is quite different. Because Paton has developed a motorcycle capable of seeking victory in the Tourist Trophy. Sacred challenge, and what a calling card for a comeback. However, the surprise doesn’t end there.
Winning the TT is above all the preserve of the CBR 1000 SP2, GSX-R 1000, ZX-10R or that kind of missile. Suddenly, we will have to develop a motor packed with watts or buy one as Mondial did with the Piega or Bimota with almost all of its models. Out of the question for Paton, who aims different. The Italian does not want a war machine, as without his past; he sets out to succeed with a piloting shrew. With the S1-R, that’s almost three times less power than Superbike motorcycles, a featherweight, high-end peripherals, and a commitment to the Lightweight TT category – also known as SuperTwin, where the machines are limited by the motorization. Twin cylinder of 650 cm3 maximum, but with great possibilities of modification. The Paton S1-R entered the game and the competition version piloted by Mickael Rutter quickly savored the goal of victory. And it is a caliber machine, with just the mandatory civilian equipment, that the small manufacturer is making available to the public – to a small audience, because it will only be available in 50 units..
So a twin. How to choose one among the multitude? Is taken a mechanism that has proven itself: the block of the Kawasaki ER-6n. After a little technical cure, it goes from 72 to 80 horses. The machine weighing only 158 kilos dry, here we are in the presence of a weight / power ratio sympathetic, exploitable, and above all which imposes fluid, surgical, demanding trajectories. On the Paton, no traction control, driving modes, anti-gimmicks or the NASA engineering system. Just the right hand, skill and speed. In short, the art of piloting.
Underneath its very vintage silhouette, clearly referencing the Paton of the 60s, the S1-R is built with a homemade tubular steel trellis frame. If you look at it a little sideways at first glance, the rest of its discovery and the detail of its pieces make it a little gem. These include the hand-welded aluminum reservoir, the 43mm Ohlins FGRT 204 inverted fork, the TTX30 shock absorbers also Ohlins, the OZ forged aluminum rims, the brake discs derived from the Moto2 and pinched by Brembo radial calipers. M4. The thrill of the competition is palpable. Oh yes, let’s quote again. The Brembo 19 RCS master cylinder, Valtermoto and Rizoma parts, the swingarm manufactured by Febur, and the SC-Project titanium line; the equipment manufacturer is also the new owner of the brand since a takeover in October 2016.
All of this can be further improved at the customer’s discretion. A shifter, engine upgrades, carbon parts and various options further customize and optimize the Paton S1-R Lightweight TT. All with an obvious concern for the quality of the construction..
After nearly 40 years of presence in competition, the brand of Giuseppe Pattoni and Lino Tonti had to leave its universe by the back door. To return to one of the most prestigious theaters of operations: the Isle of Man. Since the first version S1 Stradale in 2014, which announced the return of Paton, the project has evolved a lot although the silhouette of the beginning retains all its initial singularity..
An idea, a prototype, hard work, conviction, and a TT victory. Most of this is found in the Paton. A sports car full of lightness and passion, far from the madness of hypersports to return to more reasonable values on the open road. However, at a very demanding cost.
