Always with you: spare wheel for the trailer. Or rather, eight-inch wheels. A wide variety of standards are available for the flag parade.

Thanks to the independent suspension, the trike drives better than with a rigid axle. A central spring strut is located above the differential housing (not in the picture on the right), the feeding cardan shaft (below) is extended.

Intermot countdown part 10

Converting a Gold Wing into a trike? And then pair it with a trailer? That’s what Europe’s largest Gold Wing dealer did. And we drove the motorhome.

E.hrfurcht grabs me at Europe’s largest dealer for Honda Gold Wings, Biker’s Point Fuchs in Uslar: two rooms, kitchen, bathroom on wheels. “Which driver’s license do you need for this?” I ask company boss Tobias Fuchs. “Articulated bus,” jokes the 40-year-old. Hm, I don’t have class 2 … The legal situation is clear: Anyone who got their car driver’s license (class B or class 3 old) before January 19, 2013 can drive all three-wheeled vehicles, even with a trailer. Since then, a motorcycle driver’s license has been mandatory for trikes with an output of over 15 kilowatts. However, according to the law, you are not allowed to pull trailers …

Conversion kit from the USA

Well, with a driving license class 1 and 3 from 1984 I’m on the safe side. Just completely puzzled. What a vehicle! “Three-wheeled motor vehicle” is written in the vehicle registration document, as manufacturer Fuchs. The brave Lower Saxony have converted a standard Gold Wing 1800 from the USA, built in 2002 (model code SC 47) into a “Cobra” trike using a conversion kit from the US manufacturer California Side Car. “A mechanic needs a whole week to do the conversion,” explains Tobias Fuchs. “Only for technology, without paint, chrome and light.” This metamorphosis is impressive and goes deep into the nitty-gritty. “Actually, we only continue to use the fairing, motor with gearbox and wiring harness from the solo machine.”

An elaborate independent wheel suspension with differential and central spring strut is built into the trikes from Fuchs. The two drive shafts to the 205 rear tires from BF Goodrich from Romania are in the way of the standard exhaust systems; the trike gets new ones. And a parking brake. At the front, too, things get down to business: here is a fork with longer stanchions and stronger, progressive fork springs in new triple trees. They make the steering head angle four degrees flatter. If so, then already.

5.48 meters, 41,900 euros

Well, the trailer is still missing. Total length of the team: an impressive 5.48 meters. For comparison: the Chrysler C 300 by photographer Volker Rost, a martial station wagon with Daimler diesel, only reaches 5.01 meters. So it’s better to go solo first, without a trailer. And be careful: do not step on the protruding plastic sills when climbing. Better to get on the footrests. For endless highways, additional footrests are on board, a matter of honor. Once seated in the comfort seat, everything looks familiar at first. The creamy six-cylinder boxer wakes up with a hoarse “thump”. It is an engine like velvet and silk, running smoothly like no other. The unique engine gently sets the € 41,900 trike in motion.

The mass of switches, buttons and controls is standard, apart from the shiny attachment on the left of the handlebar for the “show lighting”.

Oops, the tricycle is more agile than expected, implements steering commands directly, and even gets around narrow bends quickly and easily. Abrupt evasive maneuvers? No problem. The steering and holding forces in curves are much smaller than in models with a simple rigid axle. The complex conversion including holding onto the narrow motorcycle front tire pays off, the straight-line stability is flawless, up to 100 miles per hour, 160 km / h on the US speedometer. It’s not just great for a trike!

Does that take the basic idea of motorcycling ad absurdum, without any inclination? In any case, the trike breaks convention. Boring? No way. An exciting experience! You see more than in any convertible, you sit outside, not inside. The landscape glides past very gently in widescreen format. That is exactly the attraction, not elevated driving dynamics.

No ABS, but 2-person sleeping cabin

The broadband vehicle with its four disc brakes brakes properly. The front stoppers are hidden under square meters of chrome, at the rear pedal-operated CSC “Performance Brakes” bite. Oops, the US model has no ABS, the wheels can lock. Still stays on track at all times, the load. And yet it is out of the ordinary: A sign on a supermarket parking lot warns “Only for two-wheelers”. What to do? But it gets even worse: Back at Fuchs, shunting backwards is the order of the day. Goes well. Then dock the unbraked trailer using the trailer coupling and seven-pole electrical plug.

Big flap and a lot behind it: as a “folding caravan”, the trailer easily swallows a large house tent.

Finale furioso! The Campmaster “Falt-Caravan” comes from the Netherlands, the land of caravans. How could it be otherwise? Under the lid there is a huge fold-out tent with a two-person sleeping cabin on the trailer (!), 4.30 meters long and 1.90 meters high. When fully loaded, the trailer can weigh 200 kg. Together with the tractor it makes 740 kg, uff. Plus 80 kg from me. My friend Erica hardly matters, neither is the box of Hansa Pils on the drawbar. After all, we are just under a ton … Nevertheless, even 1832 cubic meters find their weight a bit difficult. Attention: Always keep an eye on the width of the tractor, a stately 1.58 meters. And manage turning maneuvers well. Towing factor.

With a little practice, the five-wheeler can be moved with ease. Even on bumpy stretches the trailer runs well, easily up to over 60 miles per hour. But is forbidden! In Germany only 60 km / h are allowed. Too bad. Doesn’t go well with that built-in King-of-the-Road feeling included. Home, sweet home or Chrome, sweet Chrome? Both! The conspicuity factor can only be topped by a private jet.

Why trike? because no motorcycle license

“For many customers, a trike is a great alternative to a solo motorcycle for a variety of reasons,” says Tobias Fuchs, “we also have individual solutions for customers with physical handicaps.” He relocates the brakes, clutch and gears depending on individual requirements. There is another customer base: A jovial 60-year-old from the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Ketsch brings his 1500 trike to service. I want to know from him why Trike. “Because I don’t have a motorcycle license at all.” A weighty argument in favor of a real dream of a trike.

Jurgen Eichert (59) has been sales manager at Biker’s Point Fuchs for Honda Gold Wing for 20 years: whether with two or three wheels. Fuchs always has 30 to 50 trikes and around 100 solo machines of all years in stock. The trained heating engineer is passionate about it: “I’ve been driving Gold Wing myself since 1983, from 1990 on I traded parts for the great Hondas and had one of the first Gold Wing trikes in Germany in 1993.” Trike sales are going well, ” for customers in their mid 40s to 83 ”, but the TÜV (exhaust gas) hurdles are getting higher and higher. That is why Fuchs not only rebuilds, but also purposefully purchases many used tricycles.
