R6 Race: the Yamaha Supersport leaves the road but remains on track for 2021
A page is turning in the unfortunately neglected category of super sports motorcycles: the Yamaha YZF-R6 bows out after 21 seasons at the top, the fault of Euro5 standards and sluggish sales. However, the Iwata bombinette remains available in a non-road-approved version for exclusive use of the circuit. Presentation of the R6 Race.
Only 199 found takers on the French motorcycle market in 2019, despite all the qualities of this sporty athleticism and its eloquent track record: titled in Word Supersport since its release in 1999, the Yamaha stood out again in 2020 by winning practically all the WSSP races with Andrea Locatelli !

However, insufficient to consider the necessary overhaul required by Euro5 standards: Yamaha stops its marketing after having already made resistance with a final evolution for Euro4. To be exact, the Iwata crest will no longer sell road-approved R6s but keep a slick on the track thanks to the R6 Race….
This bike described as an "ultimate track machine" is actually a classic R6 – Euro4, therefore – which will be available in dealerships "from January" only to "allow riders to enter the national championships in the Supersport category. ", explains Yamaha.
"These customers will be able to decide the level of preparation of their motorcycle in order to improve their experience on the track", adds the brand to the tuning forks by promising a "contained price" for this (false) novelty, technically and aesthetically identical to the model tested by MNC .
- MNC test :
Hopefully this price is actually "contained" because at 13,999 euros, the current R6 is already not given! This elitist positioning – almost abusive – also contributes to precipitate the disaffection of this type of motorcycles: the Yamaha is as expensive as a Hypersport of five years ago (the R1 was worth exactly the same sum until 2014). !
It is undoubtedly no coincidence that its rival ZX-6R has achieved respectable sales (411 registrations in 2019) since Kawasaki intelligently lowered its price to 11,699 euros … Another, less ambitious alternative: bet everything on the physical and the name like the Honda CBR650R, which does not have much sporting thing but enjoys a racy line with the key 585 immats.
R6 Race GYTR Stage 1
Yamaha also offers a "ready to race" version of its Superport: the R6 Race GYTR, a motorcycle equipped with racing parts and components from its "" catalog. Access to the turnkey competition, in short !
This R6 Race GYTR receives the "Stage 1" kit which includes polycarbonate fairing, electrical harness and "Kivontbien" ECU, Akrapovic titanium exhaust line, rear controls and avia hoses. Without forgetting the air intake "released" which makes jump the revivals castrated by Euro4 of the original R6 !

The motorcycle is also delivered with its racing "saddle", lever and crown protections, hooks for the stand stand (included in the kit), a tank cap without a lock, specific spark plugs, an ignition switch or even a chain kit with 14mm pinion and 45mm crown.
The sharpest and most fortunate racers can graft it with Ohlins suspensions and Brembo calipers as above, as well as other "Recing" parts from the Yamaha GYTR catalog: MNC can attest to their efficiency by having reveled in them on when of the exciting test !
Recall that the original YZF-R6 receives a 4-cylinder in-line 118.4 hp and 61.7 Nm managed by an electronic accelerator. Its perimeter frame is connected to a fully adjustable 43mm inverted fork and large 320mm discs clamped by radial 4-piston calipers..
Yamaha had also attributed to it traction control, shifter and engine modes during its last redesign in 2018, potentially the ultimate evolution of this sport which uses an aluminum tank as well as a rear loop and magnesium engine crankcase to maintain its slender (190 kg).
