The Aprilia SMV 750 Dorsoduro had little time to light a fire of passion – the first contact lasted only half a day. What can the new two-cylinder supermoto do?

The breath of a moment determines sympathy or antipathy. What mostly happens subconsciously hits the nerve center in Aprilia’s latest coup: The shapes of the SMV 750 inspire. Slim, sporty, tall and with a stylish line from front to back, it convinces every design enthusiast.
Italian bikes often have illustrious names. The new Supermoto is no exception and listens to the addition “Dorsoduro”. Sounds important, but it means little romantic “hard back”. Francesco Polimeni, Product Manager at Aprilia, explains it this way: “We want to attract attention with the name.” goal achieved.
The Italians also managed the sound of the V2. Even when the engine is idling, the underseat exhaust emits a threatening rumble, which swells to a sonorous growl as the engine speed increases and finally ends in explosive thunder when the homologation measuring device is no longer listening.
Technically, the hard back is closely related to the SL 750 Shiver; their engines are largely the same. The Supermoto only received a different ignition / injection mapping. That costs a few HP peak power (Shiver: 95 HP, SMV: 91 HP), but the Dorsoduro presses 3 Nm more onto the road with 82 Nm; Nominal power and peak torque are also available earlier. In terms of hardware, the gear ratios differ: primary and secondary gear ratios as well as 5th and 6th gear on Sumo are shorter than on Shiver.

Only Italy can do that: stylish, gorgeous lines from head to toe.
From 2500 rpm the SMV spurts off smoothly, and the engine revs very evenly and predictably, almost uneventfully, pleases with very cultivated engine running and goes gently into the limiter at around 9700 rpm. In second gear the Sumo hardly lifts the front wheel, in first it prefers to do this exercise when the clutch helps it. The load changes of the SMV are kept within acceptable limits, gear changes are inconspicuous, the clutch works conventionally, without an anti-hopping mechanism.
The frames of the Shiver and the Dorsoduro are also similar: A bridge frame screwed together from steel lattice tube and cast light metal profiles connects the steering head with the swing arm mount and in between houses the supporting motor. The steering head angle of the Sumo is 66.1 degrees steep, and the new swing arm requires a different mount than that of the Shiver. The shock absorber is hinged directly to the swing arm. At normal pace it works very well, responds well, and bounces and dampens sufficiently well. If the pace increases, the stern begins to stir. The front cushions tighter, which is why the load swings in sharp high-speed curves. PS will tinker with the setup as soon as a test motorcycle is available.
The sitting position of the Dorsoduro turned out to be very comfortable: sitting upright, with a comfortable knee angle and a wide handlebar. The handlebars themselves appear a bit higher than those of the competition; not uncomfortable, but unfamiliar. The Italian, who weighs 206 kg according to the factory, does not bend super-easily, but is very precise and neutral in the corners, the standard Dunlop Qualifier tires harmonize well with the SMV. The stoppers of the Dorsoduro work excellently: excellent dosing, with a clear, stable pressure point and outstanding effect. At most frequent refueling stops stand in the way of well-maintained country road plowing: The tank holds? typical supermoto ?? only 13 liters.
