Of course, street fighters also go on longer trips. So it’s nice that, in addition to hooks on the passenger pegs, there are also luggage hooks on the rear frame.

Of course, in times like these, the red pencil has to come into its own. But considering the price, an adjustable clutch lever wouldn’t be an unnecessary luxury.

Of course, at some point you will know what which key is for. A label would still make sense. And these specimens are a bit too fiddly for thick gloves.

Fluid curve combinations, warm, well-tended asphalt – that’s what the Z 800 likes best.

Conventionally screwed and good. The brakes are definitely enough for a sporty country road speed.

Caution hot! With the Z 800, Kawasaki is sending the youngest edition of the legendary Z series into the ring. Only really nasty guys have always driven one "Zett" – definitely a reputation to defend.

Sugomi! Never heard? We neither. Kawasaki defines this Japanese term as “fighter nature” and “character strength” and proudly refers it to the brand new Z 800 when presented. Modesty sounds different. It remains to be seen whether the Greens are leaning too far out of the window. In any case, after the test drive, we would be reluctant to throw Japanese words like “kawaii” (cute), “dasai” (uncool) or even “uzai” (annoying) at their heads!

Here in the south of France it rains without end, the maximum attack has to wait. But the crap weather offers enough opportunity to let the new design work its magic. Angular, stocky, aggressive, front-heavy: with each series, the Z appears a little nastier. All add-on parts form the consistent line: small, angular lamp mask with aggressive-looking headlights, flat, wide handlebars, classy mirrors, beefy tank, short, crisp rear including rear light in a sophisticated Z design, jagged side panels. Even the pattern of the seat upholstery consists of a lot of small Z. The monster of the muffler may not really fit into the picture. After all, Kawasaki offers a slimmer bag from Akrapovic as an extra. The bottom line is: Styling order fulfilled, nothing “kawaii”!

Gemeinly it is still pouring. Nevertheless, the photo shoot and test drive are off. It may look bad, but the Zett places its pilot very comfortably and actively. However, despite its narrower shape, the tank still presses the legs a bit wide apart.

Z 800 more of a new development than a facelifted 750. The focus is – of course – the engine. With the same stroke, the quadruplet received a larger bore (71.0 instead of 68.4 mm). Makes an impressive 806 cubic centimeters, 113 hp and 83 Nm. The liners are now coated and despite the larger diameter, the pistons are lighter. More permeable oil nozzles take care of their cooling. Furthermore, the Greens donated a new injection housing with larger throttle valves, intake trumpets of different lengths, more voluminous inlet ducts, more robust valve seats (inlet) and also adjusted the timing. All of these measures should generate plenty of pressure from the low revs. So far as the most important changes to the engine, to list more, would go beyond the scope here. That’s why we prefer to talk about the artfully curved, polished elbows, which look great and also serve another purpose: Thanks to the windings, they are long as desired, which, according to Kawasaki, also brings steam from the cellar.

And how does the Zett march? “Sugoi” – great! The streets are dry now, gas! The 800 takes off smoothly from idling speed, and at around 3500 rpm, the booth gets a lot of momentum. The secondary transmission, which is two teeth shorter, provides additional acceleration. At around 6000 tours, the Z adds a few more briquettes and then powers up to just before the five-digit range. There the propellant pauses a little to yodel evenly, but not quite as briskly, towards the limiter from 10 500 rpm. Important: Sound and feeling leave no one indifferent with this Kawa either. The throttle response, on the other hand, is rather inconspicuous. The 800 delivers a decent performance, but does not break any records in this regard. And despite various modifications, the transmission still requires a courageous shift foot.

Curves at last, arigato, thank you! The brand-new Dunlop D 214 (special specification “J”), which work wonderfully, are used on the Z 800 for the first time. The Kawa makes its way through the meandering very neutrally and purposefully, the handling is also fine for a block that unfortunately weighs 231 kilos. However, when some colleagues swap bikes, the results are slightly different. Some Z stand up more than others on bumps in the slope, and there are also slight differences in terms of handling and accuracy. The tire air pressure is correct, apparently motorcycles and / or tires are subject to a certain series distribution. The Japanese put a lot of effort into the chassis: extensively reinforced main and rear frames, revised spring elements, modified geometry.

Kawasaki also brings a slightly slimmed-down, cheaper version called the “e version”. At 8595 euros, it costs 900 euros less than the normal Z (9495 euros). The e version is aimed at young Sugomis between 18 and 24 years of age as well as cost-conscious Sugomis. When open, this Kawa has 96 HP, only it can be throttled to 48 HP and complies with the new guidelines for the A2 driving license that will apply from January 19, 2013. Sayonara!

PS judgment

Definitely Sugomi! Above all, the styling of the Z 800 stands for combat and character. The power of the drilled out 750 engine also turns on. Sports drivers only want somewhat sharper brakes. In addition, the Kawasaki is heavy as lead at over 230 kilos and the series spread is somewhat surprising. Nevertheless, the Zett will be at the forefront of the mid-range Nakeds.
