Presentation of Suzuki models
Full range
Suzuki is renewing its model range from the fully faired entry-level model to the large cruiser and from the agile mid-range enduro to the uncompromising hyper sports car.
Suzuki stands for dynamism, extreme performance, for uncompromising Su-
persport. But in addition to picture carriers such as a GSX-R 1000, a manufacturer is above all dependent on a balanced range of models. For the 2004 vintage he has
from well-stocked leaders yet another-
times refilled. This is how you want the field
of mid-tidy travel enduro bikes are no longer left to the competition without a fight. No problem, where the right one
Drive is already on the shelf: the V2
the SV 650 drives the new V-Strom 650. It’s similar to her big sister
DL 1000 like one egg to the other. First
at second glance it stands out clearly
filigree V-Twin emerges. With 70 HP the SV-650-Motor reports about 210
In terms of performance, the DL 650, which weighs in at one kilogram, asserts its claim to leadership over the established Honda Transalp. With an unregulated catalytic converter plus secondary air system, the small V-Strom is also for the strictly pollutant-
reduced future prepared.
In this look, there was an urgent need for action with the Suzuki GS 500 entry-level model. Equipped with an unregulated catalytic converter and a secondary air system, the aged two-valve engine meets the Euro 2 standard despite carburettors. In addition to the measures on the engine, the evergreen was given an extensive face-
facelift. With a full fairing, the new GS 500 F, which weighs 205 kilograms with a full tank, not only looks much more grown-up, but can also be confused with the GSX-R 1000 on a cursory glance due to the shape of the headlights.
The marketing strategists wanted to avoid that at all costs for the super sports cars with 600 and 750 cm3. The GSX-R twins already differ from the top model in the new cladding with the distinctive headlights. There is a heavily modified core under the shell. The most noticeable innovation concerns the valve train. GSX-R 600 like that-
Like 750, the gas change is now done using expensive titanium valves that were previously only used in racing. They move the speed limit upwards and also reduce friction thanks to a 25 percent lower valve spring rate. In addition, a lot of detailed work, from the injection system to the intake ducts to the crankcase, should raise the performance and lift the 600 with 120 hp back to pole position in the top league of super sports cars.
The 750 cc, the only survivor of the once hotly contested superbike class, is likely to penetrate the range of previous 1000 cc big bikes with a specified 148 hp. The developers pulled out all the stops in order to convert the engine output of the 600 and 750 series into corresponding performance. Not only are the fairing and the completely redesigned chassis slimmer, the tank also allows the knee to be 20 millimeters narrower. Together with the optimized cladding, the maximum speed should be over 290 km / h, and that with increased handiness. A wheelbase of 1395 millimeters, 93 millimeters of caster and a dry weight of 163 kilograms set new standards in the 750 segment. Radial screwed brake calipers from Tokico ensure safe control of the driving performance.
The latest innovation in the Suzuki range of models is not quite as dynamic. Rather, the Marauder 1600 is dedicated to relaxed cruising. For the first time, Suzuki dared a heart transplant that was critical from a marketing perspective. The 1600 V2 comes from the Kawasaki VN 1600. The cooperation between the two companies is bearing its first fruits on the road. With 73 hp, the Marauder is well below the values โโof the Japanese top cruisers such as a Honda VTX 1800 or the new Kawasaki VN 2000, but ultimately performance is not everything. With the moderate 17-inch tires in widths of 130 and 170 millimeters, it promises to have a dry weight of 290 kilograms and a wheelbase of 1705 millimeters
a homogeneous driving behavior. Especially in terms of weight, it clearly undercuts the competition. And certainly also in the price.
Sales wanted to design it-
boss Bert Poensgen, as well as with the
other models, still say nothing.
E.Experience has shown that Suzuki will be well in the race with its new full range.
New items 2004
Even more extreme extremes and strong mediocrity? these two poles mark the 2004 motorcycle year. A vintage that creates a lot of tension, and the most interesting in the recent past. For sporty motorcyclists, the even lighter and stronger 1000s are the focus. Aprilia RSV 1000 R, Kawasaki ZX-10R, Yamaha YZF-R1, Honda CBR 1000 RR Fireblade and the MV Agusta F4 1000. Anyone who claims that there is a technical relationship between the bikes from Rossi and Co. and the athletes available for sale is right. On the other hand, these missiles are extremely expensive. And only to be mastered by the best if they develop their full dynamism. Because that can never be in traffic, top-quality bikes are just as unsuitable as the beautiful exotic models from Benelli and Mondial to create a broad base of enthusiasts. Here come motorcycles like the new Yamaha FZ6, Kawasaki Z 750 in the top, models like that Suzuki GS 500 F or the Yamaha XT 660 X in the lower middle class are just right. Honda has strong trumps in this segment with the CBF 500 and CBF 600. Both are available at moderate prices, with ABS on request, the CBF 600 also offers adjustment options for the seat and handlebars to make climbing as easy as possible. Honda and Yamaha have again made a name for themselves for young drivers. The road athlete CBR 125 and the Enduro DT 125 R show a keen eye for the needs of young bikers. On the following pages we present you, alphabetically arranged and with a short profile, all the important new models for 2004.
Aprilia RSV 1000 R
Two-cylinder V-engine 998 cc
139 hp 13,299 euros
Even 100 things faster while standing? this impression comes at the sight of the new, pretty RSV. In addition to the design, the technology was further developed with great dedication. The comprehensively modified V2 put 133 hp on the clutch on the test bench (see MOTORRAD 20/2003). Despite the increased power, which mainly develops in the upper speed range, thanks to the G-Kat it remains well below the Euro 2 emissions standard. The chassis has become more manageable, the stability is still at the highest level. In contrast to the Factory (see page 38), the brake calipers are screwed conventionally.
Benelli Tornado 900 Tre RS
3-cylinder in-line engine 898 cc
143 hp around 19,000 euros
As if the normal tornado wasn’t exclusive enough, Benelli has launched the RS. Top brakes with radially screwed calipers, light forged wheels and even more elegant spring elements make the visible differences to the standard model. Almost more important is what you can’t see: far-reaching modifications to camshafts, ducts and injection. They should help the 900 three-cylinder engine with the unusual cooling system to achieve more homogeneous performance characteristics and better responsiveness.
