Miracle Weapon

Content of

The BMW HP4 Race rolls out with a carbon chassis – as a limited luxury superbike on the market. The small series includes 750 pieces, the copy for 80,000 euros.

S.Since September 2017 wealthy customers have been able to whip this special superbike, the BMW HP4 Race, down the slopes, and according to current BMW data, the frame weighs 7.8 kilograms, almost four kilograms less than the aluminum frame of the S 1000 RR. A universe in the highly competitive class of high-end superbikes! According to BMW, the entire motorcycle weighs 171.4 kilograms ready to drive, the S 1000 RR according to the horsepower measurement 213 kilograms – madness!

Miracle Weapon

HP4 Race already exists is surprising, because it is not that easy to build a carbon frame that offers the stiffness and the necessary flex of a superbike and can meet the thermal requirements of a bridge frame – with which "Normal driver" finally have to cope. And that’s why project manager Christian Gonschor comments on this step that BMW "with the industrially manufactured carbon frame of the BMW HP4 Race opens a completely new chapter in the chassis construction of motorcycles". It goes without saying that the so-called RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) process is not yet a process that is suitable for large-scale production. But at least it is enough to bring an exquisite small series of 750 pieces onto the market. BMW probably does not manufacture the CFRP frame itself, but is supposed to work with an Austrian supplier.

BMW HP4 Race is not homologated!

Be that as it may, the data from the BMW HP4 Race reads fantastic for racing motorcycle fans. The non-homologated bike can only be driven on the racetrack and cannot start in official racing classes. "On purpose, we just packed everything into a motorcycle that is for sale today", comments Gerhard Lindner, press spokesman for BMW Motorrad, on the project.

He doesn’t promise too much. Because the chassis alone shines in addition to the revolutionary frame with the finest components. Such as a FGR 300 fork from Ohlins that has been tested and proven in the Superbike World Championship, with which the fork offset and the steering head angle can be varied. A racing high-end TTX36-GP shock absorber, also from Ohlins, dampens the rear. In addition, the HP4 Race is on carbon wheels, which also save significant weight. Braking is done by Brembo GP4-PS monoblock calipers with titanium pistons, which can simply be folded away at the front for quick wheel changes.

Unit price: 80,000 euros

The BMW team also worked on the four-cylinder and breathed power into the powerful engine. Instead of the nominal 199 hp of the S 1000 RR, the BMW HP4 Race should have at least 215 hp. In view of the measures, however, it should be a few more horsepower, because in addition to changed valve timing and larger valve lifts, different valve springs, longer and larger intake funnels and balanced pistons, both the milled forged steel connecting rods and the lighter crankshaft speak for pure engine tuning, as we do again and again on BMW superbikes at our TunerGP – and they usually press well over 220 hp. Customers get the BMW HP4 Race run in ready on the test bench. Because after the procedure, the valve timing and the valve clearance are measured again and possibly readjusted and the engine is sealed – the buyer as a factory driver, so to speak!

The BMW HP4 Race owner can look forward to a newly graduated racing gearbox with an automatic gearshift – of course with a blipper function and reversed shift pattern. The full superbike electronics are also on board and adapted to the HP4. For the TC, the engine braking torque and wheelie control as well as a speed limiter, the HP4 Race does not have the usual standard control elements, but the familiar colored buttons. The 2D dashboard also comes directly from racing. It does not have an ABS.

Of course that costs, which is why the BMW HP4 Race with a unit price of 80,000 euros will remain a dream for most racing fans. But we are curious to see whether the new frame technology can be adapted to larger series as quickly as the HP4 Race has now become a reality.
