Six decades of tradition

The Harley-Davidson Roadster (XL 1200 CX) complements the Sportster branding range. Its 1202 cm³ engine produces 67 hp. The model should be available in Germany from May 2016.

The Sportster series from Harley-Davidson can look back on almost six decades of tradition. The new Harley-Davidson Roadster pays tribute to this with styling in the style of dirt trackers and drag racers from the 1950s and 1960s.

Excessive chrome curtains and comfort accessories have always been the exception rather than the rule in the Sportster series. The Harley-Davidson Roadster remains true to this line and celebrates the reduction to the essentials as a design feature.

The Harley-Davidson Roadster carries the 1200 Sportster engine; in this model too it delivers the usual 67 hp; a variant with 34 kW (48 hp) is available for holders of the tier driving license. Speaking of "step": The stepped bench with quilted upholstery, in conjunction with the straight handlebars and the centrally positioned footrests, promises an engaging seating position. The 19 and 18-inch cast wheels with their ten double spokes are based on the appearance of wire-spoke wheels. Designer Ben McGinley names them "the most elaborate cast-spoke wheels that we have ever designed." Measured by their dimensions, they are very light and contribute to the agile handling of the Harley-Davidson Roadster.

The upside-down cartridge fork with an inner tube diameter of 43 mm offers 114 millimeters of travel; the stereo suspension struts on the swing arm are 83 mm – that’s quite generous for Sportster standards. The brake system – double disc at the front, single disc at the rear – is supported by an anti-lock braking system as standard, as is the case with all current Harley models.

The 12.5-liter tank in the Sportster-typical peanut design, the short fenders as well as the slots in the timing belt cover and the heat shields of the mufflers should reflect the racing spirit of past decades. This spirit also includes the analog tachometer, which is rather rare on Sportstern, which is attached to the handlebar clamp with an integrated digital speedometer.

Harley-Davidson Roadster from 12,705 euros

The Harley-Davidson Roadster is available in a three single color paint scheme: Vivid Black (matte black) with charcoal denim pinstripes, Black Denim (glossy black) with red pinstripes and Velocity Red Sunglo (glossy red) with red pinstripes. A two-tone version in Billet Silver (shiny silver) / Vivid Black (matt black) with burgundy pinstripes is also available.

Prices start at 12,705 euros for the Vivid Black variant, while Black Denim and Velocity Red Sunglo cost 12,985 euros. The two-tone version is in the price list for 13,285 euros. The Harley-Davidson Roadster should be available from dealers from the end of May – it can of course be ordered now.
