Fancy a chic leather dress in the ultimate Marlon-Brando look? MOTORRAD has tested nine stylish jackets from 300 to 450 euros in the laboratory and on the street.

Would you like a little cooler? The retro wave is not only popular with motorcycle manufacturers: today’s technology, garnished with the look of yesterday. That can only be topped by the appropriate outfit of the driver. When browsing through clothing shops and leafing through catalogs, you will quickly notice a rich selection of leather jackets in a hearty rocker style, which would have looked good on young and wild Marlon Brando on his (own!) Triumph 650 Thunderbird. However, more than five decades have now passed. As a rule, strong naked bikes have long had stable engine and chassis technology, and today more than just fashionable chic can be expected of a motorcycle jacket. Which is why a lot has to be sorted out again under the microscope, because in terms of functionality and safety, casually styled leather jackets often show glaring weaknesses.

The biggest shortcoming is the equipment with outdated protector technology. Much of what is offered below the 300 euro limit is only equipped with thin foam pads instead of CE protectors in the critical fall zones. Another problem: the lack of a connection zipper with which jacket and trousers can be securely connected. And when it comes to passive safety, too, it often looks dark in the truest sense of the word: the jackets, which are mostly offered in iconic black, lack any signaling effect due to the lack of reflectors.

That even in the price league “O-300” This test shows that everything is not in order. The back protector is not yet standard, only a few manufacturers rely on reflective material, and the connection zipper is sometimes dispensed with. You should definitely add more.
