Out and about in the Rhon
Where is the Rhon? Roughly speaking, east of Fulda. And whether you can ride a motorcycle there? Sure, of course! Even completely undisturbed and on great routes. PS went on a brisk after-work lap of 150 kilometers with reader Oliver Gensler.

Home route: On the way in the Rohn
The welcome is warm. No, even more than that. Mama Gensler, the boss of four sons, a country slaughterhouse, a butcher’s and a party service, invites us into the room of the shop. Before we have introduced ourselves properly, we have fresh coffee and oven-warm, original Bavarian meat loaf in front of us. After a hearty snack and a nice chat, we move out to the unknown Rhon with our son and PS fan Oli, his Aprilia RSV4 R and the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 provided to us. The boss says goodbye with a knowing “And bring me my boy back”. Despite the worried words of Mum’s wife, Oli does not allow herself to be asked for long, limits the warm-up phase of the tires to a minimum and gives a good band.

We are in the border triangle of northwestern Bavaria, southeastern Hesse and southwestern Thuringia. From the Franconian town of Bad Neustadt we burn to the west, towards Bad Bruckenau. According to Oli, this area would be a “no-race management zone”, which is why Mille and Gixxer, readers and editors, will soon exceed the recommended speed slightly on the curved, clear streets. What a pleasure! Hardly any cars or trucks interfere, decent asphalt quality and gentle hills really invite you to shoot. From Bruckenau it goes north and Oli apologizes for the “rush hour” on his home route. The Stuttgart clerk, used to traffic jams, no longer understands the world. How can three trucks and a VW bus be perceived as rush hour??

Signs of the past: You could also travel without a GPS and a map.
In front of Fulda, the huge waste dump of the potash mines near Neuhof, resembling a white table mountain, comes into view to the west. The constantly growing mountain even has a widely recognizable summit cross! We continue to burn to the east, towards the Wasserkuppe. The 950 meter high mountain is the highest point in the Rhon and is very popular because of its topography. The flat and wide plateau is considered to be the cradle of gliding and, in addition to airfields, also houses restaurants and the German gliding museum. We are almost alone here because of the hazy weather, watch a landing while taking a short rest and then continue blowing.
The next stage destination on Oli’s home route is the 928 meter high Kreuzberg, where the delicious Kreuzberg beer and the beer garden invite you to take a break in the Kreuzberg monastery. Because of the threat of rain, we save ourselves the “test” of the beer garden and rely on Oli’s expert judgment when evaluating the delicious pork knuckles served there. And given his family background, he should be able to judge a good “Hax’n”. After the Kreuzberg we cross Bischofsheim before the wide, well-developed streets are waiting for us again. Aprilia and Suzuki enjoy the free ride, as do the pilots. Small patches of forest alternate with cornfields, the maize is still low enough not to obstruct the view. We let it run with full concentration, but still switch off and just enjoy the motorcycle ride.
Actually too fast, but still in time we return to our starting point. Cold fingers indicate that the route was just right to return home before the big chill begins. Oli shows us the Yamaha YZF-R6, which was shared with his brothers and prepared for the race, and an already somewhat damaged Aprilia RS 250. With a cup of coffee, we drive the route again in our heads and let the impressions of the previously unknown Rhon work on us.

Rhon in the low mountain range – the tour plan.
Our target area, the Rhon, is a low mountain range in the triangle of Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. The mountains are partly of volcanic origin and the topography is soft. The highest mountain in the Rhon is the Wasserkuppe in Hesse, which brings it to an altitude of 950 meters. Since the Rhon belonged to the structurally weak border areas before German reunification, it is not particularly heavily inhabited or industrialized to this day, which is very convenient for committed motorcyclists. The Kreuzberg monastery is recommended as a gastro and break tip. Information and address at www.kreuzbergbier.de
