BMW has just unveiled its first autonomous motorcycle! Presented at the BMW Motorrad Techday 2018 in Miramas, an unmanned R 1200 GS made its first laps "as if by magic", underlines the manufacturer. In this video subtitled in French by MNC, engineer Stefan Hans shows us how the motorcycle starts, accelerates, moves, turns, slows down and stops on its own… Bluffing !

“At first glance, a motorcycle that rolls on its own doesn’t make sense,” admits BMW … But the German manufacturer’s research and development (R&D) team pursued a very specific objective during two years of secret research: make the motorcycle safer.

“This prototype allows us to improve our knowledge of the dynamics of the vehicle,” explains BMW engineer Stefan Hans, “in order to better classify the driver’s behavior and predict whether a situation is likely to become dangerous or not. In this case, we can inform him, warn him, or intervene directly ".

“In this project, our goal was not to develop a 100% automated motorcycle,” he explains. "We want to improve motorcycle safety. This is proof that this model is precise enough to handle all the dynamics of riding. We can therefore use this knowledge to develop more advanced systems of comfort and safety".

Autonomous motorcycles: the future of motorcycle technology and safety ?

"How to make riding a motorcycle safer? We know that automation is part of motorcycle safety," BMW believes, but "we don’t want to force autonomous driving as such.".

"The objective", continues the manufacturer, is "to integrate dynamic control programs into the motorcycle in order to show you the safest possible trajectory in the face of an obstacle. The responsibility of driving should obviously not be taken away from you, but advice on what to do can increase your safety. A control system could even provide more stability in a critical situation. ".
