The BMW R 1200 S from Raul

Content of

While the S 1000 RR stirs up the superbike fraction, the boxers still consider the HP2 Sport to be BMW’s flagship athlete. With a little tuning, its predecessor, the R 1200 S, is also really fun on the racetrack.

Manfred Raul has a problem. He owns a BMW. As far as not bad, it can happen. But the engine characteristics of his brand new R 1200 GS are causing troubled mines. The torque and power curves of the boxer are more reminiscent of the course of the Silvretta High Alpine Road than that of a perfectly tuned engine. A circumstance with which Raul, head of a company specializing in high-quality milled parts for fine tuners, does not want to be satisfied. That was in 2005.

Tuner-GP 2009. In addition to the slightly modified GS from back then (see PS 9/2009) there is a posh R 1200 S. Apart from optical refinements such as high-gloss rims and front spoiler, the team from Raul-Fahrzeugtechnik presented after the traumatic experiences four years earlier especially value on homogeneous engine characteristics. Time to let the cow fly.

It’s the first few meters for me on a BMW – and then with a hanging boom motor. Anyway, my boss will already know why he puts me on this motorcycle. The high-torque engine pushes me through the first corners from the lowest revs. The handiness and driving stability are immaculate thanks to the Ohlins chassis. The SR exhaust system hums dull and sonorous, but not too loud.

As a BMW rookie, I instinctively worry about ramming my udders into the asphalt if I knock down violently. Therefore, I content myself with moderate inclines and touching rests. The Bavarian animal lies in a neutral position right down to these slopes and can only be disturbed minimally by bumps. As a kind of life insurance for even more weird cases, valve covers made of high-strength aluminum, which Raul offers in different colors, are emblazoned on the test vehicle.

End of parabolic drugs in Hockenheim. Braking point. The little immersed Teleleverfront takes getting used to. Kuhzilla acknowledges fast stepping through the gear steps with slight nodding movements around the longitudinal axis, but remains neatly on track. Rum around the corner and gas. Bbbrrroooaaaap – the boxer pushes sustainably and without holes up to the limiter at 9000 revolutions. The engine, optimized in the cylinder head and intake tract, together with the individually coordinated mapping, is really fun. 130 PS and 122 Nm ensure lazy shifting driving even outside the Hockenheimring.

I drive into the pits, get off and think. I don’t think I’m going to buy a BMW for now, I’m just too young. But when the time comes, this device would be way ahead. Anyone can ride the S 1000 RR.
