EICMA 2019

BMW presented the 9Cento study at Villa d’Este 2018, and at EICMA 2019 the Bavarians will unveil their series-produced F 900 XR as a crossover model with a touring design.

I.In brief, BMW sees the new F 900 XR as a sporty tourer with an upright, long-distance seating position and a powerful design. Equipped with the twin, which has a larger displacement, the F 900 XR thus joins the Adventure Sport segment as a mid-range model under the S 1000 XR.

For the Euro 5 compatible 900, the F makes a two-cylinder in-line bored from 853 to 895 cm³. The output climbs from 95 to 105 hp at 8,500 rpm. The maximum torque remains unchanged at 92 Nm at 6,500 revolutions, but the important speed range from 4,500 to 8,500 revs should be noticeably fuller with over 87 Nm. There is also a 48 hp variant for the A2 class, which is derived from a 95 hp version. The latter cannot, however, be dethrottled to 105 hp. The ready-to-drive 219 kilogram XR accelerates from zero to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds. The maximum speed is specified unspecifically at over 200 km / h.

Pointed nose, upright sitting position

In terms of design, the F 900 XR falls back on the lines familiar from its big sister and the 9Cento study. The half-shell cladding with double LED headlights, pointed nose and manually height-adjustable window in two stages merges into the tank cladding of the 15.5 liter fuel supply. In the basement, an optional front spoiler around the under-engine stainless steel exhaust complements the cladding ensemble. The driver sits on a stepped, one-piece bench seat (825 mm seat height) on a bolted rear frame behind a high-cranked tubular handlebar. The rear with LED light tapers out slim and bears the typical extension of a license plate holder. In the cockpit, a 6.5-inch color TFT display bundles all the displays and standard connectivity features.

At the front, BMW has installed a non-adjustable USD 43 fork with 170 mm travel in the F 900 XR, while the rear, directly hinged central spring strut has a 172 mm travel, adjustable rebound damping and hydraulically adjustable spring preload. Bremspower supplies a 320 double disc system with four-piston calipers at the front and a 265 disc with a single-piston caliper at the rear. On the 3.5 and 5.5-inch wide 17-inch cast rims, BMW puts a 120/70 tire at the front and a 180/55 tire at the rear.

Lots of additional features for an extra charge

Always on board are two driving modes (Rain and Road) as well as ABS and ASC. Two further driving modes, dynamic traction control, cornering ABS and engine drag torque control, a shift assistant and the electronically controlled ESA chassis can be purchased as options. Also on the surcharge list are the intelligent emergency call, adaptive headlights, keyless ride or various seat alternatives (775 to 870 mm including optional lowering). For touring riders, a suitcase and topcase are of course available. As usual with BMW, the optional equipment can also be bundled in packages.
