Caught: New Harley-Davidson V2
Revolution engine
It is well known that Harley-Davidson is developing a new generation of engines. MOTORRAD reveals what the new Harley looks like. Revolutionary: the 60-degree V2 with water cooling.
Man must be lucky. So the MOTORRAD photographer, who was actually traveling in the USA because of a completely different story. Suddenly an unusual thump. With a full blow, a flat monster painted black pushes past him. He presses on it? the new Harley is in the box.
And contrary to the MOTORRAD Erlkonig photos from spring, this machine is almost undisguised. Only the small handlebar cover will never go into series production. The rest, however, is already series. Take the engine, for example: Harley is moving away from the air-cooled 45-degree V2. The new one has a water-cooled drive. With a cylinder angle of 60 degrees.
Equipped with four overhead camshafts, this engine will be able to represent different displacement and power variants between 1000 cm3 and 1450 cm3. The range should range from the 80-hp cruiser drive to the 135-hp Supersport twin. The mixture preparation is done by a modern ignition / injection electronics, a regulated three-way catalytic converter takes care of the reduction of the exhaust gases.
The machine photographed by MOTORRAD looks strikingly stretched. A steel double loop frame made of round tubes encloses the mighty engine skin-tight. A slim tank fits in harmoniously with the frame construction, the steering head area is somewhat reminiscent of a Suzuki Bandit. The fork with the front disc wheel is noticeably flat. The water cooler hangs far down in front of the engine. The long swing arm with the flat rear frame also catches the eye. It is possible because the transmission is very short. The primary drive is now via gears, the secondary drive in this version of the new Harley generation via toothed belt to the rear pulley.
It will be interesting to see what models Harley-Davidson still has in stock. Will this new engine, which is revolutionary for the Americans, actually power an athlete series at some point? This sport cruiser is initially planned for 2001. Then also with a pillion seat.
