Dethrottling Yamaha FZ6 / FZ6 Fazer
Fazer with 98 hp
The popular motorcycles of the 2006 season undoubtedly included Yamaha’s FZ6 and FZ6 Fazer. In the registration statistics, the 98 PS strong 600 four-cylinder all-rounder in the undisguised and half-boarded variant took fifth place. Anyone who was toying with the purchase of this motorcycle at the beginning of 2007 first had to swallow a bitter pill. FZ6 and FZ6 Fazer were only available in the beginner’s 34 HP version or with low insurance 78 HP. The full power of 98 hp is reserved for the optically and technically revamped, new model FZ6 Fazer S2.
A glaring shortcoming of throttling to 78 hp: where other manufacturers at great expense (changing the camshaft timing and reducing the intake cross-sections) gave their engines a performance-appropriate characteristic, Yamaha chose the simplest possible solution. A stop on the throttle valve limits the opening angle of the same. The rest is done by changing the ignition map.
The result has been known since the comparison test was published in MOTORRAD 5/2007. The four-cylinder turns bravely into the five-digit range without looking lively. In the higher speed range, he even hesitantly accelerates. It’s a shame, actually, as the engine runs nicely in the partial load range, is smooth and cultivated. If that wasn’t enough, the only option left was to use the Fazer S2, which is 411 euros more expensive.
The “primitive” type of throttling also has advantages: FZ6 and FZ6 Fazer can be “uncorked” for 50 euros. A different throttle stop and a ground cable to be attached to the ignition box (changes the ignition map) give the two their 98 hp and performance that is appropriate for the high-quality chassis of the sporty all-rounder.
You can also save money with Yamaha’s “Save the Piggy Bank, Part 2” campaign, which runs until July 31st. Every customer who buys an FZ6 / FZ6 Fazer receives original Yamaha accessories worth 300 euros free of charge. If you want, you can, for example, have the 50 euros credited for dethrottling.
