Honda CBR 600 RR / Varadero 1000
Center forward
For sports drivers in the footsteps of Valentino Rossi, Honda is now also building the 600 series as a double-R with a central silencer under the rear. Also heavily renovated: the Varadero 1000, in the future with injection and regulated catalytic converter.
The sad news first: For a replica of the factory five-cylinder RC 211 V, the freaks can probably save a few more years. Now the good news: the Japanese have already transferred at least a touch of Valentino Rossi to the 600 athlete. But the CBR 600 RR is not just a visually revamped 600, technically it is a completely new, independent model that is offered parallel to the 600 F..
The engine uses the same key data in terms of stroke and bore, but has been completely redrawn. Goal: It should be narrower and shorter in order to get more freedom of lean angle and to allow a longer swing arm. The result: the RR can be folded down three degrees in both directions, and the swing arm bearing moved 30 millimeters towards the crankshaft. This was achieved, for example, by installing a gear shaft five centimeters high. In addition, thanks to the outlet ducts pointing downwards, the manifolds nestle tightly against the engine housing, allowing the four-cylinder to move a little further forward.
A sequential injection system creates the conditions for rapid speeds of up to 15,000 rpm. In addition to the usual nozzle, a further twelve-hole nozzle in the air filter box injects the fuel directly at the inlet from around 6000 rpm. A 32-bit processor coordinates the total of eight nozzles. The whole system should work so effectively with the catalytic converter and the secondary air system that even professionals can hardly make out a difference between the German version with Kat and the catless foreign models. Honda is still silent about the performance for the time being.
Obviously, there is currently a technological advance in chassis construction. Honda is now also increasingly using cast parts instead of extruded profiles or welded sheet metal constructions. The frame of the RR consists of nine parts manufactured using a new type of die-casting process that are welded together. Such castings are screwed together at the rear. As with the factory machines, the swing arm is extremely stiff and composed of cast and pressed parts. Despite the enormous dimensions, it should be lighter than the simple swing arm of the CBR 600. The airbox is located at the front under the dummy tank, and behind it is the sheet steel tank that extends far down to the engine housing. This lowers the center of gravity and lets the seat slide forward seven centimeters.
W.The new Varadero 1000 looks less spectacular at first, but a lot has changed with the newly styled plastic dress too. The engine received the injection system of the VTR 1000 SP-2 along with a regulated catalytic converter and secondary air system. In addition to lower emissions, Honda promises lower fuel consumption. A sixth gear extends the range of use, especially in the upper speed level, the connections should now fit better and the speed level should drop. In order to make higher speeds more bearable, the designers improved the windshield, the screen can be adjusted in two positions. The suspension elements are designed to be tighter. A firmly screwed motor instead of the one previously stored in rubber contributes to the stiffening of the chassis as well as additional welded metal sheets, and the rear frame has also been designed to be stronger. All improvements that enhance the tourist aspect of the Varadero.
