Test: KTM 690 SMC R
KTM’s supermoto was refined for 2012
Even shortly after Christmas, KTM provides another reason to stay in the holiday mood: The supermoto single SMC has been refined visually and in terms of character – with success.
ABS, subtle shapes, moderate price – if you expect all of this from a single-cylinder bike, you should put this article aside, get the previous MOTORRAD edition (Issue 1/2012) from the bookcase, open the driving report of the new KTM Duke and read on there.
So now we are among ourselves, you may now believe. In the elite circle of the uncompromising, in the circle of the few remaining guardians of the basic values of the one-cylinder philosophy. Not correct. Your like-minded people are more numerous than you think. Because compared to the Duke, the KTM 6th90 SMCs sold twice as well in this country last year, and with 450 units it landed in 56th place in the 2011 registration statistics.

Test: KTM 690 SMC R
KTM’s supermoto has been sharpened for 2012
Jahn
One for all: The engine from the previous Duke R powers all of the major KTM single-cylinder models (Duke, SMC R, Enduro R) in the 2012 season. The Big Single generates 70 hp from a displacement of 690 cm³.
Whether it’s the precise and easy-to-shift gearbox, the hydraulically operated anti-hopping clutch that can be pulled with the power of a single finger, or the spontaneous response to every pluck on the throttle – the thick stew is agile through and through. Not always well behaved, however. He chops on the drive chain under 3000 rpm, over 6000 tours it rattles with high frequency in the handlebar ends, footrests and seat. As a consolation: Even the domesticated unit of the new Duke is not noticeably better, it also requires a sporty spirit.
Which is even more a prerequisite for the SMC R. Because despite the spring travel shortened to 250 millimeters, climbing the airy 93 centimeters seat height (factory specification: 89 cm) still requires a lot of vigor. Nevertheless, once you sit down on the somewhat softer bench compared to the previous model, the Supermoto driver appreciates every centimeter of travel. Unimpressed, the fully adjustable spring elements from the KTM subsidiary WP Suspension easily put away even bad potholes, offer plenty of reserves and, despite their particularly tight rebound damping, an acceptable level of comfort appropriate to the sporty orientation of the SMC R..
A vote for which rocking remains a foreign concept and which is confirmed when the curve swing intensifies into a hard turn staccato. Then the front does not plunge too deeply even with the sharpest braking, the seating position on the slimline bench (the tank is in the rear of the frame) can be changed in no time and the flyweight ensemble can be thrown from one lean angle to the other.
At such moments, thoughts arise about the ambitious use on karting or supermoto tracks, where the previous SMC was able to stand up to some specialized supermoto racers. And for whom the extra portion of torque of the R version will make life even more difficult. Then you can get over the fact that for the SMC R with 8,495 euros (plus ancillary costs) compared to the new, reduced-price Duke equipped with ABS, 1000 euros more have to be invested – which may make the circle of the uncompromising in the future a little more elitist.
