New supermotos caught for 2021

Spotted spooks prove: The new KTM 790 Twin is also available in the supermoto segment – in two models.

Presented after Duke 2017 and Adventure 2018 KTM will probably have two more 790 models in 2020 and complement the mid-range portfolio with them. The first prototypes of the new supermoto have recently been spotted. The frame clearly comes from the Adventure model and was only slightly modified. The most noticeable innovations are the steeper steering head angle, the flatter handlebars and the tire dimensions 120/70 R17 at the front and 180/55 R17 at the rear.

Manufacturer

The 790 Duke presented in 2017 was the start of the series.

The centerpiece remains the probably unchanged 103 hp twin from the Duke. In contrast to the 690 SMC, the new models also have the distinctive KTM Kiska headlights of the 790 sisters. The tank and tank fairing also follow the Duke model. As with the well-known SMC models, the front fender is mounted directly on the lower triple clamp.

Two versions planned

In addition to the pure Supermoto 790 SMC, the tour-ready 790 SMT will be available. It carries a larger tank than the SMC (approximately 16 to 18 liters instead of 14 liters), which, in contrast to the Adventure’s side solution, which takes getting used to, is classically in front of the driver. The SMT seat is also deeper than that of the SMC and the ergonomically shaped handlebar, like the small disc, promises improved comfort. With optional hard-shell cases, this touring supermoto will compete with the Yamaha Tracer 700, for example, and attract more ambitious riders. The dream of a 790 Duke GT should be over for now.

Premiere expected in autumn 2020

The SMC rather opens the door to the Ducati Hypermotard class, which currently enjoys a kind of monopoly position there, apart from the significantly heavier and weaker Aprilia Dorsoduro 900. We expect the 790 SMC to be a pure fun bike. As the prototypes show, only the Brembo stoppers from the 790 Duke R are used on it. With an expected starting price of 12,000 euros, the SMC should undercut its rival from Ducati in terms of price, but be clearly above the Aprilia. How much has to be added for the full electronics package including cornering ABS, multi-level traction control and so on remains to be seen. We expect the premiere of SMC and SMT in autumn 2020. Customers will probably have to wait until 2021 until they are at the dealerships.
