Full speed ahead into the future

The first batch of new motorcycles for 2008, presented at the trade fair in Paris, wasn’t exactly boring. But the lookup gets even better. As the 15 innovations presented below prove, which tackle any terrain at full throttle, from off-road to the racetrack.

The motorcycle world has expected a Honda Hornet 1000 and is getting a CB 1000 R: Behind this seemingly insignificant difference lies an ambitious goal. Because the unadorned combination of letters and numbers is reminiscent of the legendary CB 900 F Bol d? Or, which knew how to combine high technical standards with mass sales success. To build on this model, the Honda designers had to come up with a few things that went far beyond the less successful Hornet 900. The brakes and fork correspond to the latest super sports technology, the engine comes from the 2007 Fireblade. A cheaper basis for use in the naked bike than the even shorter-stroke engine of the latest Blade. In favor of a full torque curve in the lower speed range, the peak power was cut to around 130 hp; Honda has not yet disclosed how this happens. The throttle valve diameter of 36 millimeters and the relatively thin bends of the exhaust system looped under the engine indicate a new cylinder head with narrower inlet and outlet ports.

The highlight of the CB 1000 R is certainly the single-sided swing arm. It makes it possible to guide the exhaust outlet close to the motorcycle and thus ensures plenty of freedom from leaning. In addition, single-sided swings have the appeal of something special, like not only the VFR models, but also the D.ucati 916 and 1098 show. What the CB 1000 R will cost has not yet been determined; the price should be less than 11,000 euros. On request, it is also available with ABS and a composite brake system, in which case it has three-piston floating calipers.
