A design study wrapped from gauze bandages at the Tokyo Motor Show, a photo of a section of headlights after EICMA, plus two model names – Yamaha has only vaguely hinted at its new models so far. MOTORRAD at least has some additional information on the mysterious FZ8.

Be careful, don’t be fooled. The supposed photo of the new Yamaha shown here F.Z8 is not authentic, it is a computer retouching. However, according to the little information available, it should be pretty close to the original that is yet to be presented. Because the FZ8 is based very closely on the FZ6, which is to be phased out over the course of the 2010 season. Rumor has it that the chassis of the eighth is largely or completely identical to that of the six.

This is only possible because the new engine, measuring at least 750 cm3, is also derived from the well-known FZ6 or YZF-R6 four-cylinder. However, not even the proverbial well-informed circles know exactly how it gets its larger displacement. The assumption is that it results from a little more bore and significantly more stroke. This keeps the cylinder block narrow, and such a design also promotes the characteristics that are suitable for a naked bike: powerful thanks to powerful torque in the lower and medium speed range. Which is not exactly one of the strengths of the FZ6.

Because a new crankshaft is required for the longer stroke, the happy assumption was already emerging that Yamaha would install a 90-degree shaft, like the R1, which would produce fascinating running and sound characteristics. Sober facts speak against it: Without a balance shaft, which an FZ6 base engine does not have, the vibrations caused by the lack of compensation of the inertia forces would probably be too strong. It’s a shame actually.
