The Alpen-Masters is the biggest MOTORCYCLE group test of the year.
2/26
In summary, it can be said that the tourers also did well in the Alps.
3/26
On such a test track, the beautiful landscape must not be forgotten.
4/26
The Moto Guzzi ended up in last place mainly due to its high weight and relatively high consumption. For a cruiser, however, the Moto Guzzi convinces with its decent handling.
5/26
Last place went to the Moto Guzzi California Touring.
6/26
The scenario of permanently scratching running boards, the engine sluggishly pushing up the mass and a chassis that can only be balanced around the bends with a lot of muscle fat did not materialize.
7/26
The handling left a lot to be desired, but the Yamaha was able to score with its engine.
8/26
Third place went to the Yamaha FJR 1300 A..
9/26
The switchbacks were sometimes very narrow and winding – the tourers could manage that?
10/26
In the tourer class, BMW, Triumph, Yamaha and Moto Guzzi competed against each other.

11/26
The BMW F 800 GT took first place.
12/26
The tourer stood out above all with its excellent handling and driving behavior.
13/26
A lot of weight – the four tourers had to cover a fair distance.
14/26
The Triumph Trophy SE landed in second place.
15/26
The Triumph Trophy is quite massive and heavy, but can convince with its agile handling in its weight class.

The tourers at the 2013 Alpine Masters
On tourers the distances shrink and the horizon expands. But with the motorhomes you can also find the fun that was sought with them at the alpine destination?
The tourers at the 2013 Alpine Masters
W.ar the way the goal? Some in the group of four have a queasy feeling when we turn in Vinadio from the main artery in the Stura valley towards Col de la Lombarde. Because right at the beginning, the serpentines wind along the densely wooded slope as tightly as an earthworm bent by pain. Up there? With touring bikes weighing up to seven hundred pounds?

The tourers at the 2013 Alpine Masters
Moto Guzzi California Touring. So, don’t do too much. But the scenario of permanently scratching running boards, the engine sluggishly pushing up the mass and a chassis that can only be balanced around the bends with a lot of muscle fat does not materialize. Even if the casual sitting posture, running boards, rocker switch and high windshield convey an American cruiser feeling.
But this spirit, which is often supposed to help forgive some physical inadequacies, is hardly needed for the Cali. Even in the first-gear turns in the lower part of the pass, the V2, with its well-coordinated ride-by-wire motor control, smoothly accelerates at the apex of the curve and then pushes forward linearly. Strong on top of that. In the draft measurement in second gear, the Guzzi lost two of its three colleagues. In view of its mass, it can also be maneuvered unexpectedly nimbly through the curves. Nonetheless, objectively speaking, it has the least freedom from lean angles, the most sluggish handling and suspension with the lowest reserves in this comparison. Which is why she has to give way to her fellow campaigners.
The Yamaha FJR 1300 A is timeless
Forgivable, because after all, the Cali has taken on the high society of the tourer segment. Despite the modified fairing for improved wind protection, the Yamaha FJR 1300 also appears timeless in the 2013 model year. And throws the thickest pound into the ring with her motor. This famous four-in-a-row is a universal talent, not least because of the new ride-by-wire. As soft as butter in the throttle response, excellent when changing loads, grandiose in acceleration and tremendous in revving. A dream.
Which the chassis of the FJR does not dream of. Not that one would call for electronic suspension that is popular in this segment. After all, the 292 kilogram Yamaha pulls its course on the long arches of the Col de Larche like a string. But on the ruffled ramps of the Lombarde, it is quite irritating. As if a little mountain ghost were pulling the handlebars, the FJR stubbornly lets itself out of the track by bumps, feels imprecise and unwieldy. And so, surprisingly – despite the formidable engine, huge range and comfortable suspension – it cannot hold a candle to the tourist-oriented Triumph Trophy SE.
Triumph Trophy SE feels at home in the Alps
The scenario of permanently scratching running boards, the engine sluggishly pushing up the mass and a chassis that can only be balanced around the bends with a lot of muscle fat did not materialize.
Because no one would trust the massive British woman with such a bustle. With a lot of pressure on the front wheel, the Trophy SE stabs precisely in the bends, can be swiveled gently from one to the next despite its mass and is perfectly balanced with its finely tuned, electronically adjustable suspension. And because it combines these qualities with the powerful three-cylinder engine, which has been cultivated from the low revs up to the highest regions, the luxury liner feels as at home in the Alps as its designers at five o’clock tea.
At least until you turn around in the panoramic parking lots or when you pull out of the hotel garage, the dimensions of the Trophy are brought back to mind. Then the impressive 303 kilograms of live weight require careful action. Anyone who gets out of balance has lost – and it is precisely at these moments that they consider choosing the contrasting program.
BMW F 800 GT looks almost like a minibike
BILLION
The performance of the tested tourers.
Because with the BMW F 800 GT, the Bavarians are practically approaching the travel topic from the opposite side. The sports tourer looks almost like a minibike in this circle, despite full fairing. Narrow, low, light. And with precisely these qualities it sets itself in the limelight on the roller coaster of the mountains. Above all, the weight advantage of at least 80 kilograms compared to the pursuers makes the 221 kilogram GT play in a different league in terms of handling. A gentle push throws the Bavarian from one lean angle to the next, she holds the line bombproof even over the worst of faults and parries every alpine road construction challenge with a shrug
This uncomplicated nature is complemented by the measured 94 horse strong twin with gentle effort and a short gear ratio. But because with these attributes every sporty naked bike could become an alpine champion, only the proper wind protection, the amazing pillion suitability and, last but not least, the moderate consumption (3.9 liters / 100 km) upgrade the fun car to a pass car. Quite apart from that, the fully equipped GT is by far the cheapest touring bike at just under 12,000 euros. So the head-to-head race just ended in favor of the GT.
