In the 1960s, Werner Koch tinkered with his Zundapp Super Combinette with great dedication and youthful exuberance. True to the motto “A lot of noise, little power”, the moped once fulfilled all the cliches of shirt-sleeved backyard tuning. Now, 50 years later, the conversion of this black Zundapp Sport Combinette should be more successful.
Just in time for the foggy-gray winter time, I found what I was looking for. High up on the Swabian Alb, where old mopeds still heavily loaded with all kinds of goods from house and yard have to toil as mules, a black whitewashed Zundapp Sport Combinette leaned against a barn door. Stopping and sitting on it was one thing, let the engine run briefly – done. A firm handshake, and the Zundapp swayed in the van to Stuttgart.
W.The fact that it was exactly 50 years ago that I used my Zundapp Super Combinette to scour the allotment gardens and forest paths around the Solitude race track massively accelerated my purchase decision. Even then, I found the girlish, free access with my Combinette embarrassing. The Sport Combinette is completely different, because the “buffalo tank” sits in line with the seat like on a real motorcycle. That’s the way it has to be!
