Yamaha innovations 2006
The way to beauty
There was a time when Yamaha focused on building good motorcycles. Today the brand with the three tuning forks sets itself higher goals: to design very good and exceptionally beautiful motorcycles. With the 2006 vintage, this seems to have been very successful.
Nothing “bigger is better”, the little one is awesome here. The new Yamaha YZF-R6, one of the most spectacular motorcycles in recent years. Exciting, slender, a noble machine in the super-sporty middle class, which is not too posh to really work hard. Softly curved lines meet
in distinctive tips; without looking angular, the R6 looks extremely dynamic.
It’s amazing how much resemblance to
the original R1 from 1998 owns this motorcycle – and how its design language has evolved from it. The headlights look like they’re one on one
taken from the model, and yet has
the R6 has its own face. Also very much
The rear area is appealingly pointed. A diode rear light fits into the rear fairing, which is also the underside of the rear frame-
mens wraps. The illusion of a pillion seat, a stepchild among super athletes, continues to fade. A cutout on the underside of the rear fairing indicates that pillion footrests may be pushed through there and mounted on the rear frame,
However, the opening is covered as standard, no passenger accessories in sight.
Since the rear silencer only protrudes from the side of the fairing as a short pipe, it does not need a bracket screwed to the rear, which contributes to the successful rear view. The new damper design is just one of many technical changes. There’s an open under the pretty dress of the R6-
bar radically revised engine with
one and a half millimeters more bore and two millimeters less stroke than the previous model. Indications for even higher speeds and higher performance. How many horsepower will be released in the series trim, Yamaha is still hiding, but one thing is certain: it will not be less than the previous 120 hp. And one point of criticism that was annoying from the start now seems to be over: the cracking gear changes. At least the primary drive, the six gears and the secondary drive have changed their gear ratios, which indicates a completely new power transmission. In contrast, the chassis geometry was only moderately modified.
The Yamaha MT family has its own logic: after one comes three. The two-cylinder 1700 mountain range MT-01 is followed by a robust one, in comparison each-
but a small street single cylinder called MT-03. The designers have mastered echoes of the FZ6 (headlights), the MT-01 (tank and rear silencer) and even the Ducati Multistrada (the separate seats for the driver and pillion passenger) into a design unit-
melted. Independence wins
MT-03 through a tubular steel frame; the cast aluminum chassis remains the MT-01
Reserved. Not to be forgotten is that
a real eye-catcher, the strut on the side. It supports the rocker arm directly via a cast lever and
is adjustable in the spring preload.
A conventional fork from the Italian manufacturer Paioli works at the front, recognizable by the characteristic logo at the bottom of the axle clamp.
Yamaha only gives at the moment
sparse information about the MT-03, its drive is already well known: It is the one at Morini in Italy
manufactured single cylinder of the XT 660 R and X, which is also used in the Aprilia Pegaso Strada and the Derbi Mulhacen. The oil reservoir for dry sump lubrication is in front of the MT
Engine, while the XT models bunker the oil supply up in the frame. Presumably because of compliance with the strict Euro 3 emissions standard, the water-cooled engine lost five HP and almost two Nm. At the same time, the MT-03 was a good seven kilograms heavier than the XTs (around 193 to 186 kilograms with a full tank), so the new speedster will probably not be quite
develop their dynamism.
The FZ1 Fazer will be launched as the third new design in the Yamaha model range for 2006. Since the FZ6 Fazer has been a success, a similar concept has been expected for the 1000 category. Nevertheless, the motorcycle presented now is surprising in some respects. Point one concerns the engine. It is based on the current R1 four-cylinder with a 77 millimeter bore and 53.6 millimeter stroke. With lower compression and presumably different camshafts it should
be good in the FZ1 for a whopping 150 hp, that
maximum torque of 106 Nm is only a few tenths lower than that of the R1, but can already be reached 2500 rpm earlier. Point two ends the speculation about the location of the rear silencer. Not “underseat” in the stern or with
conventional, long and powerful damper on the side, but rather as a short stub pot, the exhaust port is designed. Only that the damper volume required by the 1000 power plant did not allow such a delicate part as with the YZF-R6.
Anyway, the driving photo of the FZ1 shows that it is not afraid of sharp inclines, but rather offers pronounced country road sportiness for drivers who like the torsion-resistant frames, swing arms and forks from the racing replicas, but prefer to enjoy these fine ingredients in an upright sitting position. A wide half-shell with a generously dimensioned pane promises proper wind protection. Whether it is from the FZ1 one
There will be an undisguised variant is still uncertain. What is certain, however, is that the BMW K 1200 R will face tough competition despite its nominally more powerful engine.
Speaking of BMW and competition: After the F.JR 1300 A heated up the Bavarian tourers a lot in the past few years, it is now expanding
refined. For the next season it will receive an integral braking system in combination with ABS. It is not yet known which principle it works according to, for example, whether the rear brake can still be operated independently. Nor whether the ABS control is provided by a valve system, as before, or an analog system such as the Honda VFR or the big BMW is used. What is certain is that the pane has been changed in the upper area, the cladding itself can be individually adjusted in the middle area, presumably using sliding wings. In addition, the FJR has received improved ventilation.
As already reported by MOTORRAD, the new large Cruiser XV 1900 Midnight Star, which should be reserved for the American market, is also coming to Europe (see issue 18, page 7). This motorcycle is definitely worth a look because behind its gigantic, classic elegance hides a lot of modern technology. The 1854 two-cylinder not only boasts an enormous 167 Nm maximum torque, but also with four-valve cylinder heads, double ignition, injection and three-way catalytic converter, forged pistons and oil cooling. Despite »low revs«, »low tech« no longer has a chance. The design effort ranges up to two balance shafts,
which unusually rotate on both sides of the engine.
It is also remarkable that the
XV 1900 has an aluminum frame with an aluminum swing arm and creates an almost perfectly balanced weight distribution, while other cruisers are markedly rear-heavy. Signs of a new driving experience? One can be curious.
How a YZF-R1 drives has long been known. And yet again and again an overwhelming experience thanks to its power and ease of rotation, beauty and handiness. Although she is arrowing through her second season in 2005, she stays for 2006
Visually unchanged, technically it is only presented in a more refined manner. In numerous points, however. It had to be a little more power; By modifying the inlet and outlet ducts, including shortening the inlet valve guides, the technicians found three horsepower. More of stability
serve a new timing chain tensioner and a new clutch hub.
The engineers have deliberately made the front part of the frame “softer” in individual areas, reduced the wall thickness of individual parts, changed the design of the engine mounts and made the fork bridge a little less torsion-resistant. Measures to improve handling and feedback. The extension of the swing arm by two centimeters is more tangible. This reduces the influence of the chain tension on the rear wheel-
suspension, supposedly also improves traction. In fact, the comparison test in MOTORRAD 6/2005 showed that the hindquarters cause some problems when accelerating sharply; the chances are good that this is over now.
In celebration of the 50th company-
For the 50th anniversary, the R1 is available in a very
appealing special paintwork “extreme yellow”. It is based on the color scheme of the famous Yamaha world championship machines of the late 1970s. The very noble YZF-R1 for next year
however, has the suffix SP. A dream in black / gold, equipped with everything that is good and expensive. Fork and
Suspension strut (with height adjustment) come from Ohlins, the wheels are light forged Marchesinis, which still save 400 grams compared to the standard wheels. As the icing on the cake, the SP has an anti-hopping clutch. The best technical prerequisites for intense racetrack heating. There remains a psychological problem: Anyone who dares to really push such a fine motorcycle, which only comes to Europe in 500 copies, to the limit?
