A race iron of a different kind

What happens when a now established tuner and a colorful TV bird get together? A race iron of a different kind: The Bretters-Suzuki GSX-R 750 looks strange and drives like…

Experimental would be an understatement. What Sidney Hoffmann, the four-wheel horsepower professional from the telly, optically for the Suzuki, which was technically built by Klaus Bretter GSX-R 750, met the assembled racer community at this year’s TunerGP in Hockenheim in the middle of the language center – everyone was stunned at first. The second optic hit was then depending on the taste with some in the stomach area and with the other near the laughing muscle. “Everything has been thought out,” grinned the funny Dortmund man with the cap and the nicely trimmed beard and explained to the PS editors that each color would represent an animal. After all, the joint project by Hoffmann and Bretter is called “Monkey Moto”, and of course the jungle wouldn’t be far.

When it comes to “knocking on the bush”, Sidney is a professional, said the testers Seitz and Eckhardt, but once you sit on it, the screaming colors and the whole zigzag are no longer noticeable. Then the only thing that counts is what interests us most as a two-wheeler: performance.

When it comes to engine tuning, Bretter did not go to great lengths with his jungle cat: changed timing, increased compression, an Akrapovic system on (the complete Arrow system was not delivered on time) and the whole thing was coordinated with Powercommander and SFM module for the upper injection rail . “It turns it out nicely,” explains the tuner. Makes 154 hp on the clutch from a standing start. This is what the on-site PS test bench spat it out. The same type attested 139 horses in the PS test of the last series Suzi 750. Makes a clean 15 hp more with relatively little effort!

Also very pleasing: The Bretters-Gixxe delivers the horses perfectly. The bright 750 cc takes on the gas wonderfully, doesn’t make a dent over the entire rev range and turns really nicely towards the limiter, which makes accelerating out of slow corners such as the hairpin as well as in fast bends, e.g. into the Motodrom, a lot of fun can be. The performance is not stressful, but the bike still powers quite a bit. The raging paint box is captured by the series pliers, which have been from Brembo since the last update and which, thanks to braking discs and pads, make you forget the otherwise typical Suzuki dull performance.

The fact that tuner Klaus Bretter took on the 750 Suzuki is due to his involvement in the new GSX-R 750 Cup, which he looks after technically and from which he draws his know-how. A Mupo chassis is used there, and so Sid Hoffmann’s monkey swing was also fitted with dampers from the Italian manufacturer.

The chassis was specially designed for the Hockenheimring by Cup coordinator Dirk Schnieders and worked inconspicuously on the flat course. That means: The Suzuki remained stable when braking and provided plenty of traction when accelerating out. The only thing missing from the dampers was the crisp transparency of the golden parts from Scandinavia and their sparkling clean response, which, however, would never be available for this price.

A fun racer for every hobby level

Klaus Bretter created an absolutely solid racing motorcycle with an extra shot of power. The Monkey Moto drives precisely, and its handling is on a very good level – a fun racer for every hobby performance class. The inclined buyer can of course paint such a Bretters-GSX-R according to his own taste – after all, not everyone is as stylish as Sid.
