GP of the Americas – MotoGP: the fall of Viñales benefits Marquez and Rossi
Valentino Rossi, 38, succeeds his teammate Maverick Viñales, 22, at the helm of the provisional standings of the MotoGP World Championship at the end of the third Grand Prix of the 2017 season in Austin. Certainly, Marc Marquez impresses with his fifth victory in a row at the GP of the Americas, but the performance of the Italian commands respect! Report.
Qualified on the front row for the first time since the final last year in Valencia (Spain), Valentino Rossi was optimistic about the 2017 Americas Grand Prix. But also with pragmastism: by the admission of the nine-time world champion, following poleman Marc Marquez and Maverick Viñales – with whom he hung in qualifying – would not be easy as their pace was undoubtedly higher.
Except that the case was finally easier than expected for the Doctor since his teammate Maverick Viñales made a mistake by losing the front of his Yamaha while he was struggling to follow the trio "Pedrosa-Marquez-Rossi"! Unsurprisingly, Marquez then produced the expected breakaway after taking the time to observe teammate Dani Pedrosa, who had soared like a cannonball..
Subject to problems with the front tire, the n ° 26 however had to give up his hand: "My tire was destroyed and I had in mind my fall in the previous race in Argentina", confides the Marquez teammate. Then third, Valentino Rossi as usual was able to make the best use of the situation by joining "Pedro", then overtaking him. The Doctor then put on heavy gas to make up the three tenths of penalty inflicted following his cut by the loophole after Johann Zarco’s muscular overtaking attempt in turn 4.
Marquez received five out of five at COTA !
Mission accomplished for Rossi, since he crossed the finish line with almost two seconds ahead of the Honda n ° 26! Thanks to this second place – his best performance in Austin and his third consecutive podium – Rossi takes the reins of the championship with 6 points ahead of Viñales and 18 pts over Marquez. Who would have thought that at 38, the Italian maestro would find himself in a similar position as MotoGP returns to Europe, with Jerez (Spain) as his next line of sight ?!
For his part, Johann Zarco ran out of steam in the face of the many efforts demanded by the COTA and also paid the ransom for his choice of tire, softer than those of Cal Crutchlow, who used hard tires on his Honda-LCR. The French nonetheless registered a second Top 5 on his record! Andrea Dovizioso finished 6th and first Ducati rider ahead of Andrea Iannone, very sharp on his Suzuki. Jorge Lorenzo is 9th behind Danilo Petrucci’s Ducati satelitte.
Finally, another big performance for Marc Marquez, who retains his status as King of COTA (Circuit Of The Americas) with pole and victory for the fifth consecutive time! The Honda official has won all the MotoGP races held in Austin since its introduction in 2013. Even stronger: Marquez has no less than nine victories in the United States, including races contested at Laguna Seca and Indianapolis !
