The paint is to blame

Because the handlebars can loosen, the Yamaha MT-09, Yamaha Tracer 900 (formerly called MT-09 Tracer) and Yamaha XSR 900 have to be returned to the workshop. Curious: the paint is to blame.

Yamaha’s successful models MT-09, Tracer 900 (formerly MT-09 Tracer) and XSR 900 have to go back to the workshop. Under certain conditions, the handlebars can loosen, which leads to driving situations that you don’t want to have. It sounds strange at first, is supported by an explanation of Yamaha but plausible: the paintwork is to blame for the misery. Due to the high pressure and vibrations, the paint on the underside and thus the contact side of the handlebar clamp can rub off – which alone would not be a drama. If, however, as in the case of the Yamaha MT-09 and its sister models, insufficient securing means were used when installing the stud bolts in the handlebar clamp, this can lead to the handlebars becoming more and more loose.

Yamaha has now recognized this possible effect and is recalling a number of MT models (see chassis numbers at the end of the text). According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), models built between 2013 and 2017 are affected. According to Yamaha, a new, modified handlebar bracket will be installed on the recalled models. Assembly is free of charge for the holder. Vehicle owners affected are currently being contacted by the KBA.
