Harley-Davidson XL 1200 R Sportster Roadster (V)
WEST GOODS
Two wheels, engine, seat and handlebars ?? That’s how easy Harley describes the in-house recipe for a motorcycle. Which of course has not changed with the Sportster either. According to Harley, this is brand new, but looks ?? as usual and desired? just like the old one. After all, the engine has been heavily revised, which is why it can now be called evolution. Revolutionary: New heads and a lighter crank drive with an unchanged bore-to-stroke ratio ensure more power at higher speeds, which is 53 hp for the 883 and 70 hp for the 1200
means, in each case at 6000 / min. As with the large models, the engine now hangs in rubber in a stiffened frame. Injection, Kat? Nothing, all four Sportster models, whether 883 or 1200,
wearth continues to be ventilated from a carburetor. Not to forget: the wide tires at the rear, so at least 150 instead of the previous 130 tires.
Aprilia Offroad-V2
Aprilia wants to stir up the off-road sector. That is why they allied themselves with the design office of the former Husqvarna engineer Macchi, who developed a completely new, ultra-compact two-cylinder. You read that correctly, the Italians want to compete in 2004 with a two-cylinder in the 450cc class of the Supermoto World Championship, later versions with 650 or 750 cm3 are conceivable. The engine shown is a water-cooled 77-degree V2 with a horizontally divided housing, the cylinders are integrated. The mixture is prepared by an injection system, which is started with an electric starter. The exterior of the four-valve head is very similar to the Honda Unicam design, which suggests an intake camshaft with bucket tappets and rocker arms for the exhaust valves. Gear and crank drive should have separate oil circuits. It will be interesting to see whether Aprilia can achieve the speeds of around 14,000 rpm required for an output of over 60 hp with this design.
Ducati Desmotre engine
Here are the first photos of the new three-valve engine from Ducati, which will debut in 2004 in the ST3 sports tourer, the successor to the air-cooled ST2. The 90-degree V2 with 992 cm3 displacement is based on the two-valve housing to which water-cooled cylinders and completely redesigned heads with two inlet and one outlet valves as well as double ignition were planted. The water pump was integrated into the alternator cover. Ducati names 102 hp at 8750 rpm as the top performance, the maximum torque should be 93 Nm at 7250 rpm. The chassis has also been heavily revised, the ST3, ST4s and ST4s ABS come with new cladding, optimized wind protection, better light, fully electronic cockpit and adjustable handlebar halves as well as optimized ergonomics.
Laverda 1000 SFC
Laverda is currently working at full speed on completing the 1000 SFC, the matt black prototype of which our photographer drove in front of the lens. Compared to the version shown in MOTORRAD 26/2002, little has changed, apart from the accessories necessary for road traffic. Massive, bent oval dampers under the rear push the noise emissions of the current Aprilia V2 below the required limit. The final version of the machine, which was initially built in a limited series of 500 copies, will be presented at the Milan trade fair in mid-September; it will certainly then be painted in the typical Laverda orange.
Triumph speed bike
While the Kawasaki ZX-12R and Suzuki Hayabusa have submitted to the voluntary self-restriction to 298 km / h, Triumph wants to set a final milestone in the fight for the Blue Ribbon of the fastest production machine: 200 mph should be cracked, the equivalent of just over 320 km / h. The prototype of the speed bike is currently being tested extensively in Hinkley. The engine is a 1300 four-cylinder that hangs in a tubular frame. The rear wheel is guided by a single swing arm, and the raised exhaust system with four individual silencers protrudes from under the rear. The front wheel was also incorporated into the aerodynamically optimized fairing. Nevertheless, around 200 hp are required for the intended goal.
