Better
"It’s better on three wheels", thought Piaggio’s engineers and gave the Fuoco 500 a second front wheel. What good is the double front suspension?
Incredible amazement all around: there is the Gilera F.uoco 500 with its two front wheels bolt upright at the traffic lights, while the driver calmly keeps his feet on the running boards. Wasn’t this scooter still driving around the curve in full lean angle? As a matter of fact. What remained hidden from the observers: A small push of a switch was enough for the pilot to lock the parallel axis of the two short swing arms via an electrohydraulic actuator when stationary.
This locking mechanism works up to an inclined of 40 degrees. If the driver has not yet pressed the switch or has set foot, the scooter will tip over. On the other hand, the vehicle can be parked sideways on sloping streets without having to use the main stand. You quickly get used to pressing a button; when you start driving, the blockage is released automatically. But be careful, this also happens if you just play with the gas.

When driving, the Fuoco behaves as easily as an ordinary scooter. It just looks a little unwieldy. If you didn’t know that there were two wheels in front, you wouldn’t believe it. What is striking, however, is how comfortably the front suspension works, especially on poor roads. Even manhole covers and potholes can hardly be felt? for one simple reason: hitting them with both wheels at the same time is rare.
The Fuoco also reacts calmly to ruts, and its sensitivity to crosswinds is more like that of a car than that of a motorcycle. After all, the Fuoco runs easily 140 km / h with its full tank of 262 kilograms and 28 hp on the rear wheel. Even on wet roads, the tricycle feels right at home and pushes easily over the front duo at the detention limit. Even locking front wheels when braking lose their fright.
The Fuoco ?? a beginner-friendly two-wheeler? In any case. And interest in him could increase when his successor is presented at the Intermot in Cologne in autumn. With just a few technical changes it will be possible to drive with the car driver’s license.
