Test drive the Yamaha MT-01

Bumblebees cannot fly, say the findings of aerodynamics. Too heavy, too small wings, too little lift. Over-heavy motorcycles with long-stroke bumper V2 engines don’t go around the corner in a smart way, says experience with choppers and cruisers. All nonsense, as evidenced by a spring day in a flower meadow. And the test drive on a Yamaha MT-01. This mechanical colossus breaks convention and even casts its spell over sports riders with their knee sliders rubbed down. Bull riding at its best.

A motorcycle like a monument. But a highly agile one: the MT-01 has a stable, fully adjustable chassis, snappy brakes and precise handling. And she’s surfing a huge wave of torque. The two 97 pistons play arm wrestling, lifting a huge 130 Newton meters on the mighty crankshaft on 2000 tours. It’s not an easy job to improve this uncompromising power bike for that Yamaha itself has plenty of accessories ready.
And so the Baden company Bike Side, specialist in plastic parts, left it with targeted interventions beyond Monday-
gate and chassis. With one exception. The titanium-coated mufflers from Akrapovic, offered by Yamaha as a “Stage One” kit, put the car in the limelight for all the senses better than the series counterparts. They feel more elegant, look more distinctive, and most importantly, they sound better. Dull, full, deep, they trumpet pure joy of life to heaven – with ABE.
The distinctive front spoiler continues the dynamic lines of the silencers. It hugs the basement of the towering V-engine. Nevertheless, the paint on the plastic part rasps off when you drive at a daring, brisk driving style. However, only when racers in the saddle of the torque giant really want to know. Which is easy on higher risers thanks to the wide superbike handlebars. This allows the fat Hummel to be directed casually, even tossing it back and forth in fast alternating curves without any significant effort.
CNC-milled reservoirs for the hydraulic fluids of the brakes and clutch are enthroned above the handlebars, which tapers conically towards the ends. They are much smaller and at the same time look much more elegant than the original plastic vessels. A lot happens when you pull the brakes. Actuated by the standard Brembo radial pump and steel braided lines, the original four-piston calipers bite on ABM’s wave brake discs. Brute effect with the best possible dosage, at least for experts.
Artfully milled chain tensioners from Gilles Tooling look functional and fine. The muscular appearance is topped by barred air scoops in the style of Yamaha’s legendary first brutal bike Vmax. In addition, a radicalized front fender: shorter, tighter, more concrete. There are two round LED lights in the newly designed rear section.
A small disk is emblazoned above the headlight. Their flowing, elegant shape makes the proportions of the highly individual Yamaha species more harmonious, less harsh. That easily compensates for the high-frequency pulsing of the small windshield at top speed. Especially since it offers the driver some useful wind protection. Because bumblebees can actually fly.
