More than a quarter of French people want more repression on the road !

Of course, as with each survey, we can see the glass half full or half empty … It is therefore legitimate that the sponsors of two studies carried out in March and April by Ipsos and CSA, the French Motorcycling Federation (FFM ) and the French Federation of Angry Bikers (FFMC), highlight the fact that "the French are opposed to a hardening of the repression".
Because it is undoubtedly a large majority, with nearly three in four French people (72%) believing that "the level of repression has now become sufficient", against 27% who consider "it necessary to toughen it even further" and 1% who do not feel concerned, probably due to lack of means of locomotion.
But while the slightest "speeding" – which, we cannot stress enough, does not necessarily mean "excessive speed" – is blindly penalized by fines and deductions of points – when it is not the guard to sight, the confiscation of vehicles or closed prison – it is all the same quite astonishing in 2010 to still find 27% of French people (more than one in four !!!) who dream of even more severe sanctions…
No withdrawal of points for small excess
Not to mention the traps set relentlessly by the forces of "order", whether it is to line up motorcycles and scooters which circulate peacefully in the bus lanes or park correctly on wide sidewalks, or motorists who drive while being attentive to traffic, without remaining fixed on their computer so as not to exceed the legal "speed" by one km / h…
The death penalty having been abolished in France almost 30 years ago, it would have been interesting to ask more precisely these French people dissatisfied with the current level of hype what they would like to see added to the already considerable arsenal of the road repression … Geneviève Jurgensen, if you read us ?
Following the controversy over abusive police custody – "of which 500,000 would concern traffic offenses", recalls the FFM – 86% of French people believe that a traffic violation "which has not caused an accident should not drive in custody ", according to this survey conducted on April 2 and 3 by telephone with a representative sample of" 1013 individuals aged 15 and over ".
The French are also very broadly in favor (72%) that small speeding offenses (less than 10 km / h above the authorized limit) are sanctioned by a fine but do not result in a withdrawal of points..
Is the motorized two-wheeler far left? ?
The FFM and the FFMC have also commissioned a second survey from the CSA institute to question the French on motorized two-wheelers and road safety. This study was carried out in March 2010 with a representative national sample of 1002 people aged 18 and over, using the quota method..
According to this survey, 69% of French people questioned believe that "motorized two-wheelers allow traffic to flow more smoothly in cities where traffic is very heavy and where traffic jams are frequent", while 24% do not think so and that 7 % have no opinion on the question.
On the political level, the highest proportion of French people considering that "motorized two-wheelers allow traffic to flow" is found among supporters of the far left (81%)! Follow in order: the voters of the Modem of François Bayrou (76%) – even if, "because of the low numbers, the results should be interpreted with caution", specifies the CSA institute! -, just ahead of the Socialists (74%) and … the Greens (73%) !
Those less convinced of the usefulness of motorized two-wheelers in town are therefore on the right: 67% for Front National supporters (with the same reservations of interpretation as for the Modem) and 66% for voters of the UMP.
The French are also 57% to find that "the government is not doing enough to improve the safety of motorized two-wheelers on French roads in terms of road infrastructure", against 31% who think the opposite and 12% who do not. do not speak.
In terms of road infrastructure, it is the voters of the National Front and the Modem who are the most critical of government policy (69% and 64% respectively believe that the government is not acting "enough", with same customary precautions due to the "low numbers" of these political sensitivities).
The most satisfied are naturally the UMP sympathizers (43% believe that the government "acts sufficiently"), far ahead of the "apolitical" (31%) and the ultra leftists (30%).
Jacques Bolle: "repression has reached its limits"
"These two polls show on the one hand that the axis of repression widely put forward by the government has now reached its limits", indicates Jacques Bolle, president of the FFM: "if we want to continue to see Lower the figures for road fatalities, we must finally start exploring other avenues, in particular those of training as well as road infrastructures which, as the French have observed, are hardly suitable for motorized two-wheelers. On the other hand, motorized two-wheelers are acclaimed by the French as a solution to facilitate traffic in the city ".
For its part, the FFMC underlines through the voice of Philippe Leduncq, member of the National Bureau, that "the motorized two-wheeler is today recognized by the general public as a credible alternative to traffic difficulties. The park also continues. to increase, + 60% for 10 years and constitutes 15% of the traffic in intramural Paris. However, the motorized two-wheeler remains the big loser of the road safety policy which piles up the repressive measures and misses the major factors of The insecurity of the fragility of its users, particularly with regard to road infrastructure. The effective recognition by the public authorities of their specificities, particularly in the training of all road users is becoming more essential than ever ".
