Yamaha FJR1300 AE test: on the right gear
Flagship of the Yamaha GT range, the FJR 1300 evolves smoothly for 2016, with the obligatory change to Euro 4, the adoption of a sixth gear and an anti-dribble clutch, as well as some cosmetic and practical improvements. Test.
A convincing endowment of equipment
On this AE version, as on the AS model equipped with the semi-automatic gearbox, the benefit of “electronic” suspensions is obvious. In particular, you can adjust very quickly – and without getting dirty! – the spring preload according to the load transported (solo, duo, with or without luggage), as well as the hydraulic laws (soft, std or hard, each adjustable on more or less 3 levels).
For the rest, the FJR 1300 AE has little to envy its direct rivals. On the luggage side, it comes standard with side cases (30 liters) aesthetic and functional, which can accommodate a full face helmet and are also easy to remove and install.
Note that the manufacturer advises against using them at the same time as the optional 50-liter top-case, at the risk of disturbing the stability of the machine in dynamics. On the left of the apron, a small storage with 12V socket (secure when the ignition key is missing) allows you to store small items and recharge your phone.
Another small storage space is hidden under the passenger seat. The height adjustment of the driver‘s seat is carried out quickly, by moving a plastic part provided for this purpose. In addition to the electrical adjustment of the windshield, the height of the light beam of the headlights can also be manually adjusted using two knobs located under the dashboard.
The levers are adjustable in spacing, just like the handlebars (3 positions) and the fuel cap is mounted on a hinge. Finally, it should be remembered that the presence of a shaft and cardan transmission requires less maintenance than a chain transmission.
Verdict: A relevant development
Offered at € 18,999 from the end of February, this new version of the FJR 1300 AE is further improved and is a real alternative to the much-appreciated BMW R1200 RT with a two-cylinder engine, less powerful (125 hp) and sold for € 18,905 in basic version, without ESA dynamic suspensions, cruise control or heated grips.
At this price, the FJR 1300 AE is also opposed to some attractive rivals like the Triumph 1200 Trophy SE (€ 19,390), the Kawasaki GTR 1400 (€ 17,499), or the Honda ST1300 Pan European (€ 15,799) . His colleague FJR 1300 AS with semi-automatic gearbox will arrive for its part in concessions at the end of March, at a price of € 19,999.
