Triumph Tiger 1050 test: the three-legged tiger !
Road trail, big supermoto, sporty road? The Triumph Tiger 1050 does not care about labels that can be stuck on the back. What she likes is riding, that’s all! So we tried it on 2500 km: report.
When the Englishwoman pulls out her claws !
The highway is very nice, but it’s high time to wear down the sides of the excellent Bridgestone BT-021s a bit. After Lyon, let’s branch off towards Saint-Etienne to cut through the Ardèche. A first observation is obvious: the Tiger 1050 certainly prefers billiards more than saggy surfaces..
Although quite high, the Triumph trail indeed offers a suspension travel closer to that of a road: 150 mm at the front and at the rear. Thus, the Tiger does not like to be heckled too much but does not prove to be dangerous..
On the other hand, on a beautiful asphalt, it shows a formidable efficiency, even on very tight tracks thanks to its large handlebars which offer a significant lever. It adapts with good grace to all riding styles, whether you stay upright on the bike, wiggle your hips or even extend your leg like a supermot ‘.
The magic of the 3-legged
Efficiency on small roads is also due to the excellence of the engine. Already very brilliant on the Speed Triple, the 1050 cc 3-cylinder is in perfect harmony with the versatile and fun vocation of the Tiger.
Full as an egg with two yolks, this engine resumes with incredible vigor regardless of the speed or gear engaged. We come to regret the absence of a gear indicator engaged, because the engine picks up so well from 3000 rpm that we often wonder on which report we are: in 4 or 6 ?!
The reminders on exits from curves are canonical and the overtaking of cars is simple formalities, even in 6th. As in addition the electronic injection and the transmission are free from defects, driving pleasure is omnipresent..
But the great strength of the 1050 cc block is also to bend with obvious goodwill to all uses, from the wisest to the most nasty. The 3-cylinder can be sometimes gentle and docile like a lamb, sometimes wild and super efficient like a … tiger, yes.
Its only limit occurs on "mixed" soils where its torque quickly defeats the grip of the rear tire, giving rise to more or less controlled glides….
Sacred tool
The Tiger therefore makes you want to "eat the mile", whether by attacking or in ride mode. The braking is up to the sporting performance of the machine: the radial front brake calipers combined with the two 320 mm discs and the aviation hoses offer bite, power and a good feeling.
If the ABS is completely forgotten at the front, it is triggered far too soon at the rear. But the electronic system is not the cause because it only relieves the braking when it detects a blockage. It is rather the shock absorber which lacks progressiveness and tends to be hopping. However, there is no danger in the remainder !
