Triumph Thruxton 1200 R test: Racy coffee
The flagship of the Triumph Modern Classic range, the Thruxton symbolizes for many the Cafe Racer par excellence. Still derived from the Bonneville T120, the English cafra gains in power and aroma, especially in its delicious R version tried by MNC.
Race and rock’n’roll
Launched in 2004, it takes its name from Triumph’s historic victory in 1969 at the Thruxton circuit in Hampshire, where three Bonnevilles finished at the top of the famous Thruxton 500-mile endurance race (read in particular our).
This meeting was essential for English motorcycle manufacturers at the time, since the results obtained in this event had a significant impact on their sales. Designed on the basis of the Bonneville, the Thruxton is naturally inspired by the race preparations of this model and in particular by the competition T120R. At the time, his stripped-down Cafe Racer look hit the mark.
Handlebars bracelets, rear controls, rear shell and chrome "megaphone" pots with a captivating sound: it imposes all the more since its engine, from the Bonneville 800, is rebored to obtain a displacement of 865 cc and provide a power of 70 horses.
Very quickly, the Thruxton took pride of place in the Cafe Racer movement, although the era of the little game of the sixties – to go back and forth from one bar to another during a song played on the juke. -box – is long gone … And even if the "Trux" continues to seduce, the "Cafras" of the time are gently but surely replaced by the roadsters of today.
Triumph however takes care to maintain the – its – legend: in, the body of the injectors being hidden in a simulated carburetor. And in 2015, a tribute to the famous cafe of London rockers.
But that is not enough to revive its sales … The competition has indeed furnished its weapons and released sharper models, like BMW and its in 2014, which will also soon be available in a version. .
It was high time to react and this is exactly what Triumph is doing with the renewal of its Bonneville 2016 range (,,), of which the Thruxton 1200 R is undoubtedly the flagship (read our and our).
