It was a real runner, the 1965 250 Continental GT, and because you could drive it in the UK without a license, it sold well. The new Royal Enfield has this ambition C.So does the ontinental GT, but it doesn’t want to be a fast sports motorcycle, despite the name Cafe Racer, despite more than twice the displacement and 29 instead of 21 hp.

Royal Enfield Continental GT are on the increase and the driver likes to shift up a gear to enjoy full train again. You see, not exactly the characteristics of a sports engine.
In its current form, the bumper-controlled single-cylinder of the Royal Enfield Continental GT is based on the design presented in 2009 with a common housing for the engine and transmission and the 535 set with three millimeters more bore developed by Swiss tuning legend Fritz Walter Egli.

The boring did not damage the smoothness, on the contrary. Whether it is due to the rubber bearing or the lower internal friction or both – the vibrations are present, but not nearly as vehement as in the 500 Classic, which the author drove extensively four years ago. And the five-speed gearbox shifted very well today, just as it was then – on the left, incidentally, and according to the shifting pattern common in Europe. You don’t have to overdo it with the loyalty to the historical model.
While the engine is a further development, the chassis of the Royal Enfield Continental GT has been completely redesigned. The renowned British frame builder Steve Harris helped with the development, and the result of the British-Indian collaboration is equally impressive in terms of functionality and aesthetics. The double loop frame gets by with just a few bent tubes and gives the Royal Enfield Continental GT a moderately sporty driving behavior.
Anyone who is used to directing the classic Enfields sitting low and far back casually on the wide handlebars will be amazed at the front-wheel-oriented position on the new Royal Enfield Continental GT. But it is the key to high steering precision and an active driving style that is not afraid of physical activity. But no worry. The handlebar halves sit over the – unfortunately somewhat coarsely designed – fork bridges, so high enough for a comfortable sitting position. Brakes and suspension elements are supplied by Brembo and Paioli. With their options for individual adaptation, they correspond to modern standards.
