Not only because of the increasingly strict noise and emission regulations, they are becoming increasingly rare, but they still exist: air-cooled engines! Today they are almost only used in classic-looking vehicles such as the BMW R nineT series, Ducati’s Scrambler, Kawasaki’s W 800 and all Moto Guzzis and Royal Enfields.

If you want to know without a lot of effort when the sometimes very long, wear-intensive warm-up phase is over, depending on the outside temperature, you can replace this with a thermometer from RR Motorsport on engines with an oil dipstick. Our Moto Guzzi V85 TT and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 endurance testers use one each.

Due to its hidden location, the V85 does not give you a chance to read it while driving, but you still get an overview of the conditions under which the oil gets how hot. With the Enfield, the sensor cannot measure directly in the oil pan due to its design, but only the air temperature in the crankcase, but the measured values ​​are very plausible. Of course, the indicator also works with water-cooled engines. Almost any thread and any sensor length can be manufactured according to specifications.
