RSD Dakar GS
Modern GS with Dakar ambitions
Roland Sands Design has converted a BMW R 1200 GS in the style of a HPN-BMW from 1986. The RSD Dakar GS not only looks desert-proof, it should be too.
D.he Dakar, when it started in Paris and ended in Dakar in Africa, was one of the toughest and most dangerous rallies in the world, says Roland Sands. Sands from this era was particularly fond of the HPN-BMW from 1986 in the look of a large tobacco company, as successfully piloted by the Belgian Gaston Rahier.
In order to revive the spirit of these bikes, Roland Sands Design (RSD) built a Dakar version based on a 2008 BMW R 1200 GS. But not only the appearance was important, the RSD Dakar GS should also be technically equipped for real rally use.
Telelever out, telescopic fork in
To do this, the Telelever was replaced at the front with a high-quality upside-down fork. The 45 fork comes from a Honda Africa Twin and was adapted to the new purpose with an Ohlins cartridge. With the conversion, a completely new front subframe also moved to the bike. It was adapted from a 2018 BMW R nineT – RSD manufactured the triple clamps from scratch. Sands has adapted the geometry so that the RSD Dakar GS achieves the values of the BMW HP2 Enduro from 2006. In the course of the conversion, a conventional raised fender was also installed.

The new lamp cover with two LED round headlights and protective bars also provides a real Dakar look. A GPS navigation system in the look of a classic road book holder is hidden behind the towering half-shell above the standard cockpit. A higher cranked tubular handlebar with a stabilizing cross strut ensures an optimized sitting position. New levers, hand guards and handles round off the driver’s workplace.
RSD
Giant tank from an old BMW GS
RSD borrows the XXL tank from a 1986 BMW 80 GS Paris-Dakar, but adapts it to the new injection components. Modifications were only made to the rear frame to accommodate the retro rear fender, the tool box and the new, shortened seat. Aluminum start number plates on the frame flanks remind of the racing ambitions.
On the chassis side, RSD pushes 21 and 18-inch Excel-spoke wheels under the GS, which are fitted with coarse-tread Dunlop D908RR tires in dimensions 90/90 and 140/80 to provide traction. The rear single-sided swing arm can be supported by a noble Ohlins shock absorber. Open air filters and an Akrapovic exhaust with adapted electronics should give the boxer engine wings. Solid crash bars, cylinder head covers and aluminum covers for the intake area provide protection.
The successful rounding off of the RSD Dakar GS total work of art provides a paint job in the classic Marlboro colors white and red as well as the matching contemporary sponsor stickers. The RSD Dakar GS should not come into series production.
Conclusion
The RSD Dakar GS is a successful transfer of the old Paris-Dakar spirit into modern times. Yes, the effort is enormous, but the result is definitely worth it.
