Tmax 2017 test page 1 – 2001, the Tmax odyssey
No offense to some, the Tmax is in France one of the motorized two-wheelers preferred by bikers. Or at least, preferred by motorcycle license holders. In 2012, it was even the over 125, far ahead of the ER-6 and Z750! For Eric de Seynes, director of operations at Yamaha Motor Europe, "the Tmax has become an icon, a key product in our range".

Before the arrival of the Tmax 500 – yellow! – in 2001, few bikers were interested in scooters over 125 cc. The former general manager of Yamaha Motor France, however, wishes to pay tribute to a machine which, according to him, paved the way for the "Twin-Max"…
"As a reminder, the Tmax was born following the success of the Majesty 250", recalls the boss of the Blues in the introduction to the press conference on the Tmax 530 in 2017. "Yamaha estimated at the time that there was place between this practical scooter adopted by motorcyclists and much more expensive sports motorcycles ".
The success of the sports maxiscooter was immediate: from its launch, the Tmax appealed to European bikers thanks to its clever cocktail incorporating the pleasure, protection and – small – trunk of a scooter on the one hand, road of one motorcycle and respectable engine performance of the other.
In seven years, the first version (updated in 2004) has sold on our continent to nearly 100,000 units! But the best was yet to come: in, the new look and the sharpened cycle part (aluminum frame, 43mm fork and 15 inch front wheel) ensured the Tmax a record year..
Since then, the success has never wavered. Sales of the (top) Yamaha model have always been relaunched by the Iwata firm via renewals in and, bringing the total number of copies sold to more than 233,000, two-thirds of which in three countries in the south of the Europe: Italy, Spain and France, in order of importance.
The benchmark for maxiscooters for 16 years
"Last year in Europe, 40% of sales of motorcycles (motorized two-wheelers over 50 cc) were scooters", observes Eric de Seynes. "Among these scooters, 60% were 125 cc, 26% cubed between 126 and 300 cc, and 15% (only, Editor’s note!) Exceeded 300 cc".
How does the Tmax achieve such good scores within the segment of maxiscooters, after all limited? By generating more than half of the volumes each year, of course! Undoubtedly, the Yamaha reference is however often disputed … but never worried.
Irrefutable proof that the maxiscoot ‘Yam is a good product: “our customers are loyal, more and more: in 2008, 20% of buyers already had a Tmax. In 2012, this proportion rose to 32%, and it reached 41 % in 2015 ", welcomes the boss of Yamaha Motor Europe.
To increase the appeal of their bestseller, the Japanese have not only tweaked their scooters. They also gave him special versions. "Only one model was available for the first four years. The first version arrived in 2005 and many others followed. Last year, 52% of sales were special versions", explains Eric de Seynes..
“The max is never enough for our customers,” he continues. This is why, in 2017, Yamaha is not offering one, not two … but three versions of its new Tmax: the standard model, its more "sporty" SX version and the "Deluxe" DX version, unveiled during the last show in Milan and presented on Site.
