The motorcycle world of reunified Germany pays little attention to the formerly state-favored monopoly MZ. Many overlook a very interesting series: the 660 singles Baghira, Skorpion and Co.

The German manufacturer MZ sold so little after the fall of the Berlin Wall that he went bankrupt in 2009. So it is hardly surprising that the very exciting model series around the 660 single-cylinder inherited from Yamaha has almost been forgotten. The 660 Supermoto, the last model in the single series, rolled off the production line until 2009. Review: In 1994 the Skorpion brought the brand back into the limelight with its very tried and tested 48 hp Japanese stew. With variants as a naked bike (tour), touring machine (traveler) and even as a racing motorcycle (race replica and cup), the Saxons were very ambitious in stirring different pots. The trendy design of the Enduro Baghira, which debuted in 1997, was really brave.

Together with its Supermoto offshoots (Black Panther, Street Moto, Supermoto), it is currently the most widespread 660 MZ on the used market – a real tip, not only for beginners who are also well served with the 34 PS version . Enduro riders appreciated the super-elegant Marzocchi fork and the high-quality White Power shock absorber as well as the decent overall quality of the motorcycle from the start. The bizarre but little noticed fun bike Mastiff (1997 to 2005), on the other hand, was a bit ahead of its time, flopped and also had strong competition from its own company in the form of Street Moto. The enduresque asphalt burners are still a lot of fun despite the tough and sluggish engine (at least 50 HP) by today’s standards and offer themselves as reliable second-hand bargains. It’s worth the search!

In the case of single cylinders, a proper oil supply is particularly crucial for the service life, this also applies to the MZ-660er-Single. Stews tend to become oil guzzlers on full-throttle motorway stretches, and unfortunately many careless drivers (especially 34-hp beginners) do not check the oil level as often as appropriate. So caution is advised with mileage above 30,000. During the test drive, it is essential to ensure that blue flags come out of the exhaust under load and with load changes (signs of worn piston rings or valve stem seals). The Baghira Enduro was favored by many hobby off-road drivers and long-distance travelers – with such a history a very thorough check is called for. Suspension elements, deflection levers and wheel bearings suffer greatly from off-road use, and dents, cracks and scratches are then naturally no longer the exception, but the rule. The water-cooled Yamaha engine is considered robust with good maintenance and can withstand mileages of more than 50,000 kilometers.
Market situation
The used market is almost entirely in private hands. Dealers apparently prefer to keep their hands off the MZ singles. But that has less to do with the fact that problems with the procurement of spare parts are to be expected due to the bankruptcy of the company, but rather with the fact that most of the machines are very old. A few newer models (especially the 660 Supermoto) with correspondingly low mileage (less than 10,000 kilometers) are still being offered by commercial customers. Otherwise, all other 660s can be found in the illustrious advertising sections of regional newspapers and on the Internet. Well-maintained machines with less than 25,000 kilometers, which are offered for less than 2000 euros, are popular. Even if connoisseurs appreciate the quality of the engine and chassis, only a few want to spend more than 3000 euros on a used 660. The Skorpion Sport (especially the replica) is very popular with single sport fans, as only a few street single-cylinder machines are still on offer.

The MZ Skorpion Sport was temporarily sold off as a new machine grandfather clock, but is now quite popular, especially as a fully encased race replica.

1994 The first MZ with a 660 engine is called the Skorpion and is available in Germany as a Sport model with a half-shell for 10,736 marks (5489 euros) and as a Naked Bike Tour for 9836 marks (5029 euros). The 48 hp (also available as a 34 hp variant) single-cylinder comes from the Yamaha XTZ 660.
1995 Presentation of the Skorpion Race Replica with 50 HP and 175 kilograms after MZ successfully competed in the sound-of-single class. Price: 15,242 marks (7,793 euros).
1996 Skorpion Traveler model based on the tour with full fairing and two 30-liter suitcases. Performance variants: 34 and 48 hp. Price: 12742 marks (6515 euros).
1997 Market launch of the Baghira (Enduro) and Mastiff (Funbike) models for 10,750 marks (5496 euros) and 12,250 marks (6263 euros) with 50 hp. The Baghira is equipped with a fine Marzocchi fork, both models with a White Power shock absorber. A naked classic version with wire-spoke wheels will be added to the Skorpion Sport, price: 11,760 marks (6,013 euros).
2000 The sport is sold, the fully disguised Cup is to take its place – price 10,340 marks (5287 euros). The Baghira is now also available as a supermoto version Street Moto with 17-inch wheels, but initially only as a special edition “Black Panther” for 11990 marks (6121 euros) with black paintwork.
2002 Sale of the Skorpion Cup, Tour and Traveler models.

2009 The last year for the 660 series at MZ and at the same time the last year for MZ. The 660 Supermoto will finally be offered at a price of 7146 euros.
