Wind in the sails to Ushuaia…
Long straight lines beaten by a violent wind, before crossing the Strait of Magellan by boat, take our two youngsters and their 125 to Ushuaia, kingdom of travelers… Fifth episode: beaten by winds from the end of the world !
Monday, February 9, 2009
Long, very long, but then really very long straight lines punctuate our descent of Patagonia … The kilometers follow one another, but if we take into account a side wind of the "extremely violent" type, it gives passages at 50 km / h in 3rd…
To top it all off, cities are becoming increasingly rare, so don’t be idle on the road either! In the end, arriving in Rio Gallegos, banana in the face, the hardest part is over … to us the Tierra del Fuego! The myth, an island at the end of the world and at the end of the end: Ushuaia…

Small check up of motorcycles in Rio Gallegos, then direction the Chilean border. Yes, because this region is divided into Chilean and Argentinian lands. At the border, a lot of boring paperwork rests our heads tossed by a still strong wind !
Then the landscape is transformed: appearance of thousands of different colors, clouds playing with the sky, distant rainbows … Unique! A ferry takes us across the Strait of Magellan and allows us to admire the beauty of the region from the sea.
On the boat, meeting with a Brazilian biker (again!), A policeman by profession, around fifty, who makes Sao Luis (North Brazil) / Ushuaia in a month … A little bit of the road together, then a little dinner in the town of Sombrero allows you to get to know this seasoned traveler better … He only has a few days left to go back up: good luck amigo !
Thursday February 12, 1:30 p.m.
On paper, we had to cover 110 km of tracks to reach a paved road and the Argentinian border, not the Moon in itself … But in reality, these 110 km take us four hours and wear out all the limbs, especially the buttocks….
And to top it off, our friend the wind is still pointing its nose, just to have fun with our light 125s and significantly blocking our optimal speed! We arrive at the border in compote, red tape and a good sandwich to regain strength, then direction Rio Grande, last stop before the end of the end !
Friday February 13
On the road, bikers, backpackers, hitchhikers, cyclists and other "riders" are present enough to reach Ushuaia. The opinions heard have always been divided on this "extremely touristy city without interest" according to some, but also "mystical city" according to others … The best is therefore to form our own idea !
The road leading to the city is exceptional: first crossing the Andean forest, then sumptuous ascent of the tail of the Andes by the pass, the only Andean pass where you do not cross borders. And finally, mountainous descent, eternal snow in sight to finally arrive at the end: Ushuaia, amigos !
The city itself doesn’t have that much charm, but the setting alone is worth a visit. Former convict city, it is surrounded by the Andes, which increases the feeling of isolation…
Here it is the kingdom of "sea and land" travelers, between bikers traveling in America for two years, "sailors" returning from Antarctica, Uruguayans on break, here, there is everything !
Sunday, a short walk in the Martial Glacier offers us a memorable view of the bay before the little bit of daily rain … Here, according to the locals, there are four seasons in one day! Moreover today, the weather must have blocked in the winter because it rains constantly, which delays our departure towards Ruta 40, another myth to come … To be continued …. Stay tuned !
