Some invisible police checks on alarms like Coyote and Waze
The interministerial delegate for road safety, Emmanuel Barbe, announces that he wants to put in place a decree in mid-July which would prohibit the reporting of certain police checks on community driving assistants such as Coyote and Waze.. Speed controls would not be affected … for now ?
Driving assistants or warning devices radars "danger zones" have always been in the sights of the government, which sees them as an obstacle to the proper functioning of its cash machine. Think about it: these community systems make it possible to signal a speed camera or a police check, then to share in real time its position with other drivers (10 million users in France for the free Waze application, 2.5 million for the box or the app with Coyote subscription) !
- MNC of 25 October 2011 :
In 2011, the State therefore dealt them a severe blow by forcing the operators of these devices to reduce the precision of their police indications thanks to l. From now on, the location of a speed camera or a control is no longer indicated at a fixed point, but in an area of 500 m in town, 2 km outside town and 4 km on the motorway…
- MNC special file :
- MNC of April 27, 2017 : The government wants to ban the possibility of reporting speed camera checks
Despite this, the success of these solutions is confirmed: according to the observatory of application downloads, Waze – and its alerts in the form of a mustached policeman below – would be the "sixth application" most installed in France. last year, all categories combined! And it is not the implementation of 80 km / h on the roads from this Sunday, July 1 that will reverse the trend, on the contrary !
Hence the second offensive launched by the government last year, this time with a decree aimed at on alarms. At the time, the Minister of the Interior – the very ephemeral Matthias Fekl – did not hesitate to use fears linked to terrorism – painfully acute – to justify this project to make the control zones invisible..
"These perimeters, communicated by the government to the operators of these electronic services, will be those where certain sensitive controls will take place, in particular in the context of the fight against terrorism or organized crime, road safety actions, the search for escaped detainees or kidnapped persons, "he said, promising that these perimeters would not exceed" 20 km "and that the ban on reporting would not exceed" 24 hours ".
The "Harry Potter" decree
This project is now on the verge of being completed: the implementation of this decree, internally called "Harry Potter" – in reference to the invisibility cloak of the famous little wizard! – would even be officially scheduled for "mid-July", according to our colleagues from .
But let us be reassured: the interministerial delegate for road safety, Emmanuel Barbe, promises that this umpteenth repressive measure will not concern the location of speed controls, which – according to him – can continue to be shared on the various warning devices. community…
"This measure will be applied only when the police will carry out anti-crime, alcohol and drug checks. Motorists will still be able to signal the presence of the police on their alarm, but the information will not be not passed on to other motorists, ”explains Emmanuel Barbe. In other words: it will be absolutely useless !
Basically, the project defends itself as driving while intoxicated and under the influence of other drugs are unjustifiable causes of accidents. The fact remains that if the enormous financial windfall generated by the radars (nearly a billion in 2017) was more redistributed towards its struggle, with more personnel and physical resources allocated to systematically control around meeting places, the State would not need to make these controls "invisible"…
Especially since the form of this "Harry Potter" decree leaves you wondering: how can you be sure that no speed control will not be "accidentally" made invisible? Above all, what will ultimately prevent the government from extending this invisibility to all types of controls, including speed? ?
Impossible ? MNC would not bet on it: after all, we are still talking about a government which, against the almost unanimous opinion of the population, is forming user associations, but also about fifty deputies and several senators !
- Exclusive :
Several more steps before the installation
The operators of community warning devices have not said their last word: the boss of Coyote, Fabien Pierlot, has thus indicated to our colleagues from RMC the existence of "many legal and above all technical steps before this decree is applied".
Will these "many" steps be sufficient to divert Road Safety from its repressive trajectory? Doubt is unfortunately allowed, since each of his decisions is based on the untouchable precept "for your safety" written on the radar panels !
Finally, note that the giant Google – owner of Waze since 2013 – is thinking precisely of introducing notifications of danger zones on its famous guidance application "Maps", according to the site. In other words: indicate the areas of police checks and speed cameras! The American tax optimization giant may wait until mid-July to launch – or not – this feature in France…
