Speedbrain 450 Rally in the test
Dakar stages and ice cream parlor posing
With the Speedbrain 450 Rally you can win stages in the Dakar rally or just roll to the ice cream parlor to pose. The Bavarian manufacturer Speedbrain builds cafe racers of the unusual kind: victorious rally machines that can be legally registered.
“Well then, have a good trip!” The sergeant wishes and, with an emphatically serious expression, pushes the desert racer’s registration document into my hand. The man tries not to show any uncertainty. He probably suspects that he has to serve as an involuntary leading actor in a TV comedy series. But there is no hidden camera or a moderator who subsequently exposes our stop at the street cafe as a gag at “Do you understand fun?”.

Dakar stage wins and road legal
Because the Speedbrain 450 Rally is real, the papers are real and the four stage victories that this bike won at the Dakar Rally 2013, anyway. Nevertheless, the official interest of the gentleman in green is understandable. A rally machine suitable for racing rarely snakes its way through the stop-and-go traffic of a small German town. A street legal one has never done this. At least so far.
At the last Dakar rally this machine was still known as Husqvarna TE 449RR by Speedbrain. Behind the bulky name hid the successful cooperation between the Italian Husqvarna plant, which was then still part of the BMW Group, and the Bavarian Speedbrain rally team. While Husky supplied the motors for the TE 449 sports enduro, the six-man company based in Stephanskirchen near Rosenheim was responsible for everything else.
Whether the basic vehicle concept or the hardware such as tubular steel frame, deflection lever, plastic frame rear, the cladding made of carbon-Kevlar composite as well as all milled and turned parts – everything was created directly by or on behalf of the crew around mastermind Wolfgang Fischer. Luckily. Because despite the sale of Husqvarna to KTM in February of this year, Speedbrain is not disappearing from the motorcycle scene.
98 centimeters seat height!
On the contrary. Because the engine in particular, which was adopted almost unchanged from the BMW G 450 X sports enduro, which was built between 2008 and 2010, in the Husqvarna enduro, has a unique selling point: it is approved with an output of 41 hp. The majority of all competitive enduros, on the other hand, have to be content with less than 10 hp in the homologated version and can therefore only be used at full power on closed-off terrain.

Lively: a seat height of 98 centimeters needs to be taken with vigor. Nothing for those who don’t like sports.
The more confidently I press the button. Sonorous, but moderate, it shoots out of Akrapovic’s titanium exhaust. Fortunately, there are enough curbs in cities. Want a seat height of 98 centimeters – uff! – be climbed first. But the climb was worth it. The narrow bench, the ultra-slim knee joint and the tightly drawn up front panel create a completely unexpected impression. Not that of a massive rally car. As well as? With empty tanks, the graceful Speedbrain weighs just 137 kilograms. Only when the 19-liter monocoque rear frame and the central ten-liter tank behind the cylinder are flooded does the rally break the three hundredweight mark with 159 kilograms.
In general, the Dakar bike doesn’t seem strange to you in city traffic. No jerking, no chain whipping, no uneven idling, little vibrations – the Speedbrain is so cultivated that, in addition to indicators, license plates, mirrors, horn and brake light, a basket for fetching bread was part of the standard equipment. You get used to it quickly and easily. Also because the imposing Speedbrain turns into a marveled eye-catcher within seconds at every traffic light.
Nevertheless, a desert racer needs solitude and exercise – even if the arterial roads have to suffice for that. It is progressing. Not brutal, the 39 hp measured on the test stand are not enough, but neat. Later, we will funnel the racer through the measurement program in a very mundane way, and in this set-up we will record 5.1 liters consumption and 143 km / h top speed. But didn’t Wolfgang Fischer give us this gray plug on our way? The key to sports mapping? Should I? After all the appreciation of good legality? OK. Just one time. Stop, lower the seat, click in the plug – and what is that? From mid-rev the 450 suddenly takes another deep breath, clicks into the five-digit rev range in no time at all, releases 52 hp there and will run 167 km / h with free coasting. Sober numbers, but what a difference! Only acoustically nothing has changed. The sound from the muffler is still pleasantly subtle. If so, then you can leave the plug in there. There are no traffic controls in the quarry.

For sportsmen: A mapping that can be activated by a plug brings 13 hp.
The clutch, which sits directly on the crankshaft, can be dosed with pinpoint accuracy, the dohc single pushes smoothly through the speed range and the front wheel meshes with the loose surface to inspire confidence. In a jiffy you catch yourself getting cocky. Is surprised how the remarkably well-balanced machine can be kicked a few meters through the air from every small embankment – and is amazed at how uncomplicated such an imposing rally car can behave. However – hand on heart – he should too. Because at almost 24,000 euros, the tariff for such production racers is customary on the market, but still impressive. The target group of the handcrafted racer remains limited to ambitious competition pilots. They can then have the machine upgraded to the factory version from the Speedbrain team for a surcharge of 15,000 euros and, if necessary, book an all-round carefree package with mechanic service, spare parts supply and entry fees for the 2014 Dakar, which starts in Argentina, for a further 60,000 euros.
For everyone else, it’s a shame that this desert rally doesn’t start in Paris anymore. With the basic version of the Speedbrain you could even have traveled by axle to the start. Quite legally.

Speedbrain 450 rally for competition pilots
Finally, the driveway to our replacement Sierra turns off the main road. Gas off. Only now can you hear the hum of the intermediate shaft timidly reminding you that the crankshaft of the short-stroke lift is turning backwards. The responsible concept of the chain sprocket concentric with the swing arm axis was deliberately discarded due to the forward motor in the Speedbrain. Obviously, it didn’t do any harm. Because, without wanting to diminish the surprising qualities on asphalt, the Speedbrain finds its true purpose on gravel. Open the gas, tap the clutch briefly, line up the bike at the entrance to the curve with the rear wheel spinning and pull through the line in a clean drift, that’s exactly how the Bavarian wants to be moved. And makes this performance as easy as possible for your pilot.
