Indian and Munro on track to set new speed records
Fifty years after Burt Munro, his grand-nephew Lee takes the controls of a new Scout officially prepared by Indian Motorcycle, in order to set new speed records at Bonneville next August. But the tests at El Mirage were very conclusive…
A few days ago, Indian Motorcycle officially entered three motorcycles in the El Mirage (California, USA) speed test. The goal ? Prowl their machines for the famous Bonneville "Speed Week" and try to set new records…
Not content with successfully completing its test program, the brand from Springfield (1901 to 1953) and then Medina (since its takeover by Polaris in 2011) has already established three new brands in three different categories thanks to a Chef Classic and a 2015 Scout … and a brand new "Spirit of Munro" Scout.
Fifty years after Burt Munro’s exploits on his own 1920 Scout (!), A 2017 Scout painstakingly – and voluntarily – prepared by a team of Indian engineers set off on the salt lake with, at the controls, a certain Lee munro.
Who better than Burt’s great-nephew could indeed take up the torch of the world’s fastest kiwifruit? "I have racing in my blood. I want to perpetuate the memory of Burt through my athletic career and provide spectators and those involved with quality entertainment," explains the second No.35 New Zealand on his official website
"I believe that with enough support, I am totally capable of achieving better results in the championship", concludes the driver who shines on his side of the globe on Ducati (999 and Panigale) and seeks to make a ( pre) name on the Isle of Man in particular (on GSX-R).
On July 16 on the salar (salt desert) of El Mirage, Lee Munro succeeded in re-inscribing his famous surname in the annals of world speed on two-wheelers, by exploding the previous record of the 1350 cc MPS- category. G (Modified Partial Streamliner or "prepared and partially streamlined").
"Lee had to exceed 167 mph (268.76 km / h) to set a new record," Indian said. "After completing his rookie sessions during the May meeting in El Mirage (at strict speeds, editor’s note), it was his first chance to let go of the bike and explore its potential".
But the Scout seems perfectly ready to face the salt lake of Bonneville since it propelled Lee at an average speed of 186.681 mph (or 300.43 km / h)! The other two motorcycles entered by Indian and driven by two technicians from the brand, also broke the records in their categories. Indian has clearly dug up the hatchet: next battle, August 12-13…
Statements:
Gary Gray, Vice President, Head of Product Development for Indian Motorcycle:
“When you break records during practice, you know your machine is on point. Our engineering team did an incredible job on the ‘Spirit of Munro’ Memorial Scout. Running in a different category allowed Lee to honor his great-uncle Burt as he should. Burt’s record stands, and Lee is now joining him on the books ".
Lee Munro, grandson of Burt’s first cousin:
"Indian has been a great partner, not only providing me with an incredible machine, but giving me the opportunity to recognize and honor everything Burt Munro has done for the bike.".
