Kawasaki perfects its Ninja ZX-10R and RR champions for 2021
As "preview" during the recent WorldSBK tests in Jerez, the Ninja ZX-10R and RR are changing their look for 2021. Kawasaki unveils in full – and in video with French subtitles – the multiple changes undergone by its Superbike champion , undefeated since 2015… Presentation.
Last week during a winter test of the Kawasaki Racing Team in Jerez,. In her black "Winter test" colourway, Jonathan Rea’s Ninja – and Alex Lowes – made one think furiously of Darth Vader, the dark "Samurai" of Star Wars. !
In its commercial liveries (Green / Black / White or Black / Green for the ZX-10R, all Green only for the RR), the new Superbike is more reminiscent of its Ninja H2 cousins. MNC also notes on the Superbike the appearance of the Kawasaki River Mark crest, "reserved for legendary models of the brand".

More stealthy, the new lights of the ZX-10R are also lighter 1.2 kg for this equipment supplied exclusively by Mitsubishi, against 1.65 kg for the old halogen models. The aerodynamic appendages which frame them bring cohesion within the Kawa sports range. But not only…
According to the scientific calculations of Akashi engineers, "the integrated ailerons incorporated into the structure of the front face (…) channel the air flow and create an additional downforce of about 17% greater than that of the current machine ". A good point in the curves … but a brake in a straight line ?
To compensate, the Greens have repositioned and better integrated the driver on his machine. 10mm flatter and forward handlebars, 5mm high footrests, repositioned rear brake fluid reservoir, higher seat back, straighter and higher 40mm bubble: drag would be reduced by around 7% . And the handling of the motorcycle would be significantly improved? MNC can’t wait to check out !
The new Ninja? A good winner’s face…
From a mechanical point of view, the mill becomes "greener" by respecting the Euro5 antipollution and noise-reduction standard … and accentuates its "Kawa" character by adopting a new gear ratio: the 41-tooth crown (Vs 39) and the three shorter first gears should increase acceleration at low speeds on the road … and at medium speeds on a circuit where the engine is roaring !
To improve its performance, the engine manufacturers have mounted on their 998 cc in-line 4-cylinder with pawl distribution, "a new air-cooled oil cooler, developed by the KRT". Just behind, the exhaust is modified: coupling of different collets (1 and 2, 3 and 4 now) and advanced catalysts in the pot to increase the temperature faster.
Ninja electronics are also evolving. On the handlebars, we note on the right the appearance of a fully electronic throttle control, on the left new stems allowing you to control the new TFT instrumentation, to connect your smartphone to take advantage of the Rideology application and to set your cruising speed. (cruise-control as standard).
The new ZX-10R 2021 has a new "select" button placed under the starter which allows you to select one of the four driving modes Sport, Road Rain or Rider. These simplify the management of traction control (5 degrees of intervention and disconnectable) and engine mode (Low, Medium or Full).
Finally, Kawasaki has refined the part-cycle of its six-time Superbike world champion: the pivot point of the swingarm is lowered by a millimeter (!) And remains adjustable on the RR. The wheelbase is increased by one centimeter (2 mm more offset at the front, 8 mm more behind) in order to obtain "greater stability and better traction", will undoubtedly have spotted the ruthless JR.
The Showa suspensions are renewed in their functions but the calibration of their springs are revised: harder for the BFF fork (21 N / mm against 21.5 previously) and more flexible for the BFRC shock absorber (95 N / mm Vs 91) . The fork also sees its stiffness reinforced at the level of the lower triple tree..
When it comes to braking, the new "Zedixediss" retains its pair of 330mm front discs bitten by Brembo M50 radial-mount monobloc calipers as well as its single 220mm rear disc with single-piston caliper, but the latter benefits from new pads more efficient…
A variation of the "basic" Ninja, the ZX-10RR serves as a base (!) And homologation for the competition machine entered by the KRT in World Superbike and entrusted since this 2020 season to the tandem Jonathan "six times world champion immediately "Rea and Alex" I’ll beat you on your own motorcycle "Lowes…
The ZX-10RR for champions like Jonathan RRea
"Limited to 500 units for the whole world, the Ninja ZX-10RR 2021 is equipped with Marchesini forged rims and Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires as standard, recalls the Greens, also undefeated since 2015 in the manufacturers’ standings..
For 2021, the "double R" – not to be confused with the future BMW M1000RR – benefits from the same evolutions as the standard Ninja and adds a few more. Its pistons supplied by the preparer Pankl lose one segment and 20 grams, while gaining DLC (Diamond-Like-Carbon) coated axles.
Camshafts, valve pistons, ducts in the air box (all at 5 mm rather than 10 and 30) … Everything combines to make the 4-legged take 400 more revolutions, i.e. a maximum speed 14,700 rpm, reference value for future racing motorcycles.
Stronger in the mid and high revs, the competitive configuration of the ZX-10RR, however, develops only one more horsepower (204 hp against 203) and returns 3.1 newton-meters (111.8 Nm against 114, 9 Nm) to the ZX-10R intended for road and track days.
Please note, Kawasaki only communicates for the time being the Australian values which differ slightly from ours: for information, the 2020 ZX-10R is currently credited with 203 hp and 114.9 Nm on our continent, 200 hp and 113.5 Nm at the other side of the planet. This remains a lot …. less than the CBR-1000RR-Rrrrr and its 217.6 hp (for 113 Nm) !
The two new Ninja will arrive in dealerships in France in the second quarter of 2021 at prices that remain to be precisely defined: "between 19,000 and 20,000 euros for the ZX-10R 2021", is content to project Kawasaki France, "and around 10,000 euros more for the ZX-10RR 2021 ".
